This large hat-dress pin has been crafted with chinoiserie patterns in solid .800/.999 silver and mounted on top with a decorative element carved from natural Nephrite jadeite jade. The carving depicts the flying figure of a mythological dragon.

This kind of beetle was highly symbolic to ancient Egyptians, it represented rebirth and renewal. They believed that the sun was pushed across the sky every day by a giant scarab, the god Khepri. In real life, the scarab beetle lays its eggs in a ball of dung and rolls the ball ahead of it wherever it goes. Originated in Ancient Egypt. A scarab is shaped like a dung beetle. There is a head, wing case, and legs. It is sometimes rounded and sometimes flat. The scarab was associated with the god Khepri who was the god or rebirth, creation, and the sun. Dung beetles were the earthly personification of Khepri as they would lay their eggs in balls of dung and then roll the dung balls all around until the eggs hatched. Early hieroglyphics depict Khepri as a scarab holding up the sun. There were hundreds of memorial scarabs created to memorialize Amenhotep III’s deeds. These included the bull hunt scarab which symbolizes strength and victory over chaos. Later, around 2000 BCE the scarab was used in jewelry and as seals. Mardi Jo Cohen was born in 1959. Her works can be found in the Yale University Collection, the National Museum of American Jewish History and the Museum of Art and Design in New York, as well as other prominent museums and galleries coast to coast. Often seen in the form of serving utensils and jewelry is rarely seen let alone available to acquire.
The Memphis style
Was emerged in 1981, when the Italian designer and architect Ettore Sottsass founded a group of artists and designers called Memphis. Bob Dylan’s song 'Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again' was playing on repeat during the group’s first meeting, which led to the group being named 'Memphis'. After the inaugural meeting, the group decided that they would meet again in February 1981. The members brought over 100 drawings with them, picturing a variety of bold, colorful designs with multiple stylistic influences. The Memphis Group went on to create furniture, fabrics, patterns, ceramics and other products in a distinctly Postmodern style that blended stylistic traits of 1950s kitsch, Art Deco, and Pop Art. If you love unashamedly brash and bold colors and patterns, you’ll be very happy to hear that the Memphis Style, the design style pioneered by the 1980s Memphis Group, is very much back in vogue.

Great antique piece, created in England during the Georgian period, circa 1820. This is a convertible pendant brooch carefully crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats and accented with applications of black enamel. Embelished with fine selection of gemstones such Dutch rose cuts diamonds and a Colombian emerald. It is fitted at the reverse with a hinged pin bar with a security hook to wear as a brooch. This piece can be also wear as a pendant.
It should be noted that the emerald and diamonds used in this piece are of exceptional quality. Seeing a piece from this period with an emerald of this quality is very rare and difficult. Usually these pieces with that kind of precious stones were disassembled during the later Victorian period to create new pieces. This is a great brooch of great rarity, with an excellent craftsmanship and surely a collector's item.
Diamonds: Accented with 8 old Dutch rose cut diamonds, 3.84 carats, white colorless F/G color, SI-1 clarity.
Emerald: Mounted with 1 semi round cabochon cut (7.1 x .2 x 4.5 mm) of a natural Colombian vivid green emerald of 1.70 carats.
Note: The emerald displayed in this piece, are from the Muzo region in Colombia, with great green color saturation, vivid green and transparent with no inclusions. Muzo is a town and municipality in the western Bocaya province, part of the department of Bocaya, Colombia. It is widely known as the world capital of emeralds for the mines containing the world's highest quality gems of this type.
Birthstone: Emerald for the month of May.
Weight: 27.45 Grams, (17.60 Dwt).
