Stettinius’ wry sense of humor, references to popular culture, and use of kitschy subject matter permeate the entire black and white exhibition. The invitational image, “Yoda’s Garden”, is a perfect emblem of the exhibition’s mischievously comedic representation of Americana. In this image, a scarecrow proudly stands at the center of a growing cornfield, a gingham dress wrapping its body and a mask of the popular Star Wars character “Yoda” serving as its head. This piece made in England, circa 1770 is of an unusual size and with the added feature of folding drop leaves. Made from solid mahogany without veneers the piece is heavy and mannish with a deep rich color to the wood. The table is accented with fine detailed carved line bands along the edge of the drop leaves and well shaped turned balusters for uprights and nice simple feet on pads. ABOUT: Victoria Goldman’s twenty-year-long fascination with Tarot has created a series of photographs based on the imagery and the mythology behind the ancient Tarot cards. Each image in the collection is inspired by and named after one of the 22 major archetypes of the Tarot. While photographing and teaching yoga and meditation in India, Hawaii, and throughout Europe, Goldman always made sure to carry a Tarot deck in her backpack. She views Tarot as a tool for personal elevation, helping her direct her focus and better understand her psyche. The collection’s soft focus and figurative emphasis is reminiscent of the work of Francesca Woodman or Julia Margaret Cameron, whom Goldman cites as personal artistic inspirations. The concept behind the exhibition was long thought-out; while some pieces date as recently as two months prior to the exhibition opening, others date as far back as 1999 or 2000. Shot primarily with vintage Polaroid and film with a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, the dark, moody, mythological images recall a classical tone that mirrors the timelessness of the cards themselves. The invitational image, entitled “Wheel of Fortune”, depicts a young woman in a glittering gown, her backside facing the viewer and her body positioned to spin a large carnival wheel hidden in the darkness of the photograph. The high-contrast nature of the image abstracts the gown, morphing the glitter on the dress into drops of light that shine through the dark air. The slender young woman in “Fortune” can be found in several of the collection’s photographs, depicting not just Lady Luck, as in the invitational image, but also the Emperor, the Devil, and even the World. Says Goldman, “I chose to use one main model for this show to speak to the fact that all of the characters that Tarot contains are within each one of us.” This model appears again as the inspiration for “Judgement”, a color portrait portraying the woman surrounded by furs, with a brass crown on her head and a large magnifying glass held against her face. The magnifying glass distorts the model’s delicate features, expanding her nose and bright blue eyes, while sky and tree branches reflect brightly upon the glass itself. Victoria Goldman has been exhibiting her photography on both a national and international scale for over 25 years. Goldman was born in New York City, attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, and has lived in Santa Fe, NM for the last 15 years. Her work has been featured on numerous book and CD covers, and has been published in editorials such as Healthy Living Magazine, Yoga Journal, and The Magazine. This lovely old tray made circa 1860 is inlaid with mother of pearl and tole decorated with flowers set into a lustrous lacquer surface applied to the tinware tray. The flowers are painted in a lively and realistic manner and the tray is further decorated with a meandering border of flowers and vines in gilding and colors along the edge of the dished section of the tray and then again on the broad flat area of the tray's edge. The stand in a Regency form is also decorated in similar colors and with gold. The tray has a label from the 1840s affixed to the reverse that says it was restored and most likely at that time the stand was fashioned and painted to accompany the tray. The stand folds and can be easily moved to make it a perfect movable coffee table...

This small detailed work made between 1890 and 1900 is skillfully painted representing a court lady in regal costumes being attended to by a small child carrying a bolt of silk cloth. This centered in a medallion where the raised decoration is heavily embellished with gold and patterned details. The round outer area is done in a cobalt blue with more goldwork designs and the interior of the box holds small painted objects as symbols of refinement and or beauty. The box is signed by the painter's hand but as yet we have not translated or matched it to a specific maker's work. Wares of this type are most often produced in the city of Kagoshima in Kyushu province during the Meiji period and reflects the export industry designed to cater to western tastes but not particularly bought by Japanese citizens. The Robin Rice Gallery announces a solo photography exhibition by Pete Kelly. The opening reception will be held May 3, 2017 with the show running through June 25, 2017. Pete Kelly’s latest show admirably showcases the lush greenness, diverse landscape, and ever-fleeting light of the British terrain. We are invited to join his excursions throughout the country as he brings light to the captivating, idiosyncratic characteristics of the land. He captures the oddities of the landscape; solitary figures bathing in sunlight, silhouette of a frolicking Great Dane in the mist, and subtle remnants of a bygone era. Kelly’s incredibly unique, picturesque editing style further mythologizes his subjects, he meddles with an air of mystery that defines the viewers experience. Kelly employs a mixture of a single image with layers of photographs of textures. The feel and look of the end result pay homage to English romanticist landscape painters such as J.M.W Turner and Constable. Kelly applies varnish and then uses Photographic Encaustic wax over the print. He encases the archival pigment print in beeswax and damar resin; tree sap in its purest form. These organic components have been found to have preserving qualities by ancient Egyptians, which replace the need for glass over the photograph. The impersonality of a raw digital file is alleviated through this process and makes the image a ‘one off. Combining modern photographic and printing technology with ancient crafting techniques, Kelly 
is the originator of art that is tactile, archival and organic. In one image entitled ‘Brabyns Autumn” examines man’s contemporaneously interruptive and complimentary relationship with the surrounding land, and zeros in on a serenity only manifested when man and nature successfully coexist. Small figures, animals, and dwellings found in the landscape are essential points of interest for Kelly. Whimsical and sophisticated. Stylistic and simple. Studied and carefree. That’s what emerges when you take a photojournalist by study, fashion photographer by trade and fine artist by instinct and leave him alone with his camera and a muse. Burris’ work is influenced by his early career spent working with fashion photographer Bill King and inspired by the decisive moment made known by the Henri Cartier Bresson. He defies the confines of either discipline. It is not fashion photography, which is by nature produced, but rather purely spontaneous. Todd left the world of fashion photography after building his own career in Milan and New York to go to LA and find his niche. He embraced his fascination with flea markets and penchant for discarded items that wouldn’t ever be chosen because they were trendy but because they were interesting. Burris packed his 1979 white Pontiac station wagon with his finds. When he came upon a stage that fit the props, he called on his muses and created a visual story on the spur of a moment. The collection of black and white images conveys a sense of effervescence and Élan. It includes photographs from Burris' time in Los Angeles as well as earlier experimental work in Milan and New York City. Anything but superficial, the invitational image, "Paget #1" challenges the traditional symmetry of beauty. We see a dramatic close up of a woman’s face, her intense eyes framed by the stark contrast between her porcelain skin and jet black hair. The lighting is such that her face is divided by shadow, one half dark and mysterious, the other half light and classically beautiful. The effect is deeply engaging. The viewer doesn’t know when the photo was taken but you want to know more. In “Mercer Street. NYC" we are taken back to the darker days of soho in 1992. A woman is shot from behind, walking down the gravel filled street in a long white flowing cloak, There is a patina of glamour set in the grit of real life. This sense of asymmetry threads throughout the exhibit, Some of the prints have a purposefully grainy and soft contrast, reminiscent of a newspaper photo. Burris manipulates the film during developing to create an “un-reproduced” effect. The heavy use of toned black and white and selective focus the photographs have a distinctive grainy texture that is reminiscent of a newspaper print. After completing his degree in Photojournalism, Todd left hometown Nashville in 1985 for New York, where he assisted photographer Bill King among others for several years before heading to Milan to strike out on his own. Within months he was shooting for magazines Amica, Grazia and Cento Cosa. He stayed for three years before returning to New York. There, he picked up Glamour, Mademoiselle, YM and several commercial clients that he worked with for years before taking a hiatus in 1993 to start a fine art career; something he had wanted to do since he was a student. He went to Los Angeles, and produced a body of work that he has shown since in various group shows as well as a solo show with his gallery Robin Rice in New York. He has sold many of these images to the corporate collections of NY, China and Tokyo Polo Ralph Lauren, Bloomingdales, Macys and London’s Connaught Hotel...

ABOUT: In this exhibition, Lance Clayton’s aquatic, figurative photographs contain an attention to detail that leaves the viewer constantly discovering new information within them. His oblique compositions are a profusion of the quirky, the surreal, and the ambiguous, all of which are permeated by a haunting presence. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. The invitational image, “Swim”, is an illustrative shot of a man doing the butterfly stroke, his back to the viewer with arms powerfully extended across the frame, as if to embrace the open, infinite skies above him. The grainy quality of the piece is created using a dark room technique in which tissue is layered upon the photograph, creating an allover ethereal atmosphere reminiscent of Edward Steichen’s early work. Another image, “Rungs”, photographed in Lake Okeechobee, Florida, shows a rusty silver pool ladder descending into a vista of midnight blue water. The highlights and reflections in the water, however, resemble the night sky and thereby disorient the viewer’s perspective. The piece entitled "Kim, Orem, Utah” expresses some of Clayton’s more hauntingly sensual themes. The photograph displays a woman floating in a pool, her darkly lit face above the water and her serpentine body below. The sinister, yet lyrical, mood of the photograph is largely emblematic of the entire collection exhibited. Clayton’s inspiration is primarily grounded in dreams, with references to notable artists such as Diane Arbus, George Hurrell, and Duane Michaels...

Allowing them to speak to her, rather than the opposite, each object is chosen not because of an image West is trying to recreate from her mind, but because of each object’s sheer attraction. The sharp subconscious connection West feels to her still life objects comes across strongly. ABOUT: In her ninth solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery, veteran artist Patricia Heal documents her visual narrative of their enchanted home in upstate New York. Hidden within untouched forests lies Peabrook, a babbling brook running through the property. The classic architecture of the house is offset by uniquely quirky interiors designed by the English-born Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cotsifas, which generate an otherworldly existence within the estate. “Peabrook is my Neverland,” Heal states, in reference to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. “It is a fictional place often described as a metaphor for eternal childhood.” Heal hopes that, with just a visit to the gallery and a little imagination, you, too, can see Peabrook. Her use of the large format, now-extinct Polaroid film for her black and white photographs, and the warm soft colors found in many of the other pieces of the collection, contribute to the sense of antiquity and fantasy surrounding Peabrook. The whimsical subject matter, including mythical creatures and extensive taxidermy, complete the “magical” representation of Heal’s home that she strove to depict. The simply framed 4” x 5”, 5” x 7” and 8” x 10” photographs sit within large mattes, in keeping with the classical quality of her images. “I really wanted to work in film again, and this project seemed the right one to do it with,” says Heal, who lists Sarah Moon and André Kertesz as artistic inspirations. The dark and mysterious invitational image, “Willow”, depicts a portrait of a hooded woman, her downward gaze partially obstructed by the soft branches of a fern from the surrounding garden. The earth-toned image contains the unpredictable streaked effect of developed instant film. In another image, entitled “Sitting Room”, we see a positive image of a film negative. Most notable is the hanging rhinoceros head towering impressively over two antique sitting chairs...
