Bohemia made these compositions by carefully capturing the graceful drips and squirts of bright yellow acrylic paint around bright magenta peony flower submerged in a water tank, which produced a mesmerizing arrangement of color, shape and form. The artist explains that with each image he seeks to “…create not only an image, but an entire world within my image.” Newbold Bohemia (born 1965, Evansville, Indiana) mainly creates photos, although his work shares as much in common with painting as it does photography. Rather than using the camera to record the world around him, Bohemia prefers to work against the journalistic nature of photography. He creates his own world from scratch. In his studio he arranges still-lifes, builds sets, hires actors, and lights the scene. After capturing the image he often further enhances the work through digital or mechanical manipulation before printing the final work. Although not formally trained as an artist, his work is heavily influenced by his education and work in psychology, marketing and graphic design. Visual organization and story telling are equally important to Newbold Bohemia, although one may take precedence over another is a particular body of work. His work often focuses on the everyday and mundane, as well as historical and societal references. Tension, conflict, and humor are often introduced to create new ways of seeing the world we think we know. Newbold Bohemia currently lives and works in Chicago. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the United States. He is currently represented by the seller based in Hudson, NY. ABOUT: In her ninth solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery, veteran artist Patricia Heal documents her visual narrative of their enchanted home in upstate New York. Hidden within untouched forests lies Peabrook, a babbling brook running through the property. The classic architecture of the house is offset by uniquely quirky interiors designed by the English-born Patricia and her husband, Anthony Cotsifas, which generate an otherworldly existence within the estate. “Peabrook is my Neverland,” Heal states, in reference to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. “It is a fictional place often described as a metaphor for eternal childhood.” Heal hopes that, with just a visit to the gallery and a little imagination, you, too, can see Peabrook. Her use of the large format, now-extinct Polaroid film for her black and white photographs, and the warm soft colors found in many of the other pieces of the collection, contribute to the sense of antiquity and fantasy surrounding Peabrook. The whimsical subject matter, including mythical creatures and extensive taxidermy, complete the “magical” representation of Heal’s home that she strove to depict. The simply framed 4” x 5”, 5” x 7” and 8” x 10” photographs sit within large mattes, in keeping with the classical quality of her images. “I really wanted to work in film again, and this project seemed the right one to do it with,” says Heal, who lists Sarah Moon and André Kertesz as artistic inspirations. The dark and mysterious invitational image, “Willow”, depicts a portrait of a hooded woman, her downward gaze partially obstructed by the soft branches of a fern from the surrounding garden. The earth-toned image contains the unpredictable streaked effect of developed instant film. In another image, entitled “Sitting Room”, we see a positive image of a film negative. ABOUT The idyllic and playful world of The Peconic Bay in Southampton, NY dances to life in Luciana Pampalone’s first solo exhibition. Each location was scouted by Pampalone and transformed into a vintage 1930s setting by the use of her models and props. A Graphlex camera, aviator goggles, parasols, retro bathing suits and games of croquet, (just to name a few) subtly tamper with the past, breathing life back into the 1930s. ABOUT In this exhibition, Mindaugas Gabrenas invites us to reflect on the poetics of place through his lyrical and surrealist imagery. His hand-printed silver gelatin prints reveal abandoned regions, wild coasts and strange territories from Lithuania to Scotland to America. As a scientific innovator, he uses unique techniques and unconventional materials in order to create his whimsical, dream photos. In “Spinning The Wheel”, stars trace the sky in a curved motion and meet the water below creating a sense of the infinite. As Gabrenas explores and captures landscapes through very long exposures, he actually meditates and reflects on the world around him encouraging his viewers to imagine themselves within the landscapes and dream with him. In another image “Dream About an Empty House”, that was taken in Lithuania, we see a young girl from behind in a red polka dotted dress as she faces an abandoned home. Using his handmade camera he constructed by merging two cameras—a Kiev 88 and a Kodak Duaflex II. The viewfinder of the Duaflex serves as an additional filter on the lens of the Kiev 88, which is fixed to its body with several macro rings. Before shooting the film, he wraps it in black rye bread and waits several days for the mold to grow onto the film. The combination of these two techniques creates a sense of motion around the central figure. “Alternatives”, our invitational image, pulls us into Gabrenas’ world. The focused close-up and abstracted view of train tracks distorts a familiar shape into a strange and unusual form. The tracks lead you in the distance, a blurry city of New York. The ironic lack of human life in New York City conveys a mystifying sense of place. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering.
