Specifically Nowhere, Yellow (Abstract Geometric Painting with Grids on Yellow)

By Donise English

Located in Hudson, NY

Large abstract geometric painting with intricate line work in pencil and gouache on a bright yellow background "Specifically, Nowhere (Yellow)" made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 gouache, acrylic, pencil, and colored pencil on paper, mounted on panel 48 x 48 inches unframed, 50 x 50 inches with a dark brown stained wood floater frame Surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This large abstract geometric painting was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a bright yellow background overlaid with intricate line work in graphite and colored pencil. Thousands of hand drawn lines serve as a backdrop for a bold geometric form in a dusty violet and dark gray gridded pattern that references "an imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on paper is mounted to wood panel and complemented with a dark stained wood floater frame. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. The surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish. More about the work: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Artist CV: EDUCATION Master of Fine Arts in Painting Bard College 1986 Bachelor of Science in Art History State University College at New Paltz 1977 Additional Study: New York Studio School (Drawing Marathons) Columbia University, School of Architecture Women’s Studio Workshop TEACHING Professor of Studio Art, Department of Art and Art History, Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY Coordinator, Interior Design Program, Florence, Italy campus 1992-present AWARDS NYFA Fellowship in Painting 2018 Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent, University of Bridgeport, CT 2000 Purchase Prize, “11th National Juried Exhibition” College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore 1999 First Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts ‘95” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, CT 1995 Joseph A. Examples of his work can be found carried by the best-dressed women from the highest levels of society and in institutional collects such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as well as a long list of other international museums and institutions too numerous to mention. Vortices (Minimalist Abstract Color Field Painting in Aqua, Deep Blue, & Black)

By Shawn Snow

Located in Hudson, NY

Horizontal minimalist abstract acrylic painting in color fields of aqua, deep blue and black. oil and alkyd on canvas in a Larson Juhl black wood recessed framed Inspired by stones, stains from nature, erosion and artists such as Rothko and Sam Francis, Snow produces meditative fields of brilliant aqua, blue and black color by layering oil paints with a fast drying alkyd medium. The network of layers are bound to a complex under-painting with broad bands of pigment while the rapid drying alkyd allows Snow to continue the succession quite quickly, revealing beautiful boundaries of color. With his painting Snow strives for purity, seeking depth without illusion, using horizons of colors as a harmonious language to create chords, scales and tones. The artist has exhibited extensively in the New England region and has shown with Carrie Haddad Gallery for more than ten years. Surface texture of this painting is incredibly smooth due to the combination of paint and chemicals used. Palette is a brilliant aqua and...

In the Afterglow (Contemporary Atmospheric Landscape Color Field Painting)

By Jane Bloodgood-Abrams

Located in Hudson, NY

Modern Luminist, Hudson River School landscape painting on canvas of the expansive view over the Hudson River as observed at the top of Olana, the historic home of Frederic Church "In the Afterglow" by Jane Bloodgood-Abrams, painted in 2021 Horizontal landscape painting, 48 x 60 x 1 inches unframed with white painted sides wired on reverse for easy hanging Artist's signature is located on lower left Acclaimed artist of the Hudson Valley, Jane Bloodgood, takes her painting to a new level with a new work entitled "In the Afterglow". Her interpretation of this very iconic view (observed from the top of Olana, the historic home of Frederic Church located near Hudson, NY) is set during the very quiet moments of a summer's evening when the sun has dipped beyond the mountains. The crystal blue sky illuminates with the sun's setting rays; a golden band of yellow haze otherwise known as "The Venus Belt" is an atmospheric phenomenon only visible shortly before sunrise or right before sunset. The water reflects the pink and purple glow that forms near the horizon; the dusty shadows of trees tower over the water's edge. We marvel at how simply Jane captures a complex phenomenon, evidence of her unparalleled ability to paint light and endow her work with luminosity. Yet this painting succeeds not only in its representation of the actual landscape and the awe produced by the experience, but also in its contemporary abstraction of atomsphere. The big, open blue sky is stacked with the colors of the sunset against the horizon, calling to mind a Rothko or the other great color field painters who achieve mood and depth from singular color. About the work: Painter Jane Bloodgood-Abrams has become one of the area’s most celebrated artists, gracing viewers with her compositions of sky, river, and earth. Being less concerned with documenting specific scenes, Bloodgood-Abrams is focused on capturing nature’s essence, “the deeply profound moments, where there is a connection to a vital energy.” Her process begins with being in nature, where she allows the emotional energy of the landscape to filter through her psyche. The memory is then translated onto canvas after being worked over a period of time with layers of paint that is applied, wiped away, and reworked. The result is a radiantly dramatic remembrance of Bloodgood-Abram’s encounter with “something beyond everyday life”. The artist’s final hope is for these images to evoke remembrances within the viewer's own personal relationship with nature. Artist Biography: Jane Bloodgood Abrams was born in Queens, New York. She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, in 1985. Three years later, she earned a Master’s of Fine Arts at the State University of New York in New Paltz. Now she paints in the Hudson River Valley and the Berkshires. By Ragellah Rourke

Located in Hudson, NY

Abstract acrylic painting on canvas with a pastel purple, yellow, and green palette “Beneath the Shining Sun”, painted by Ragellah Rourke in 2022 30 x 30 inches, oil on canvas Sides are cleanly painted so additional framing is optional Wire backing for easy hanging Artist signature located on the back This contemporary, abstract painting was created by Hudson Valley based artist, Ragellah Rourke in 2022. Her most recent body of work focuses on relationships between color and space. Elements of symbolism, reminiscent of Gustav Klimt, decorate the composition with abstract markings and calligraphic gestural brushwork. Warm yellow and purple tones with hints of green radiate upwards into a background of white, recalling the awaking the nature during the beginning of spring. There is wire installed on the back for easy hanging. The painting’s sides are cleanly painted so additional framing is optional. Artist Statement: My paintings are very textural and built up slowly over long periods of time. The surface holds the memory of the painting’s development, all the time looking for clues for what will come next. I look for connections between the forms that develop. They are never something that I logically calculate, but rather a long string of chances, thoughts, and guesses. The appearance and meaning develop throughout the progression of the painting. It is a continuous search for resolution, balance and mystery within the painting. Opening No. 50 (Abstract Landscape Painting on Canvas in Romanticist Style)

By Leigh Palmer

Located in Hudson, NY

Contemporary, abstracted landscape reminiscent of Hudson River School & Romanticist painters oil on canvas 40 x 48 inches Romantic (yet modern) Hudson River oil landscape painting of a vast field in the foreground with a red and blue sunset sky in the background. This painting is of a horizontal orientation and is finished with an olive green border painted directly onto the canvas. The edges are finished with the same color, so no additional frame required here. Once a hard edge realist painter, the artist eschews those details, letting the stroke of his brush and moody palette leave an abstract implication of the landscape. In the Openings series, Palmer integrates the frame into the painting. This element contributes to the narrative, suggesting the viewer is inside looking out. We are not a part of the landscape, rather we are a peaceful witnesses to nature that will transcend even our own existence and continue to change with the seasons long after we have passed. We are romanced by Leigh Palmer's unique ability to pare down and find the true essence of the landscape, gently veiled through his own soul. We are proud to have exhibited his work since the inception in 1991. Artist Statement: My paintings are based on observation of the landscape in the Hudson River Valley where I live, and are improvised in the studio; the images are found or discovered in my memory of familiar places and developed during the painting process. Human beings do not appear, but their presence is felt in the marks left on the ground (furrows, fence rows, roads), and sometimes in the air (smoke, haze). About the artist: In 1987, Leigh Palmer moved with his family from suburban Duxbury, Massachusetts, to Tivoli, New York, a quiet town on the Hudson River, north of New York City. His subject matter shifted to the sprawling hills and countryside of the Hudson Valley. “I wanted to respond to the new landscape I was seeing, to catch something of the feeling I had just before dark,” says Palmer. “I took a lot of photographs, but I was happier with the paintings I created from memory.” Leigh Palmer has been represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY for over 25 years. Gouache and graphite on handmade paper. 24 x 18 inches unframed, 28 x 22.25 inches framed. Artist Statement: “As an artist, I find endless possibilities overwhelming and use self-imposed boundaries to focus my work. This often includes some combination of: a literal grid or graphite border, employment of barbecue skewers or wooden chopsticks in lieu of paintbrushes for mark making, use of a monochromatic or limited color palette, and a reliance on shape and pattern to tell a story. Limiting the elements at play adds a measure of gravity to each decision, and every detail about the paper, the viscosity of the paint, micro variations in hues, and even the sharpness of the point on a skewer matters. I’ve found that the more restrictions I put in place when I paint, the freer my work has become, allowing a tension to form between the organic and prescribed. Rather than sketch before starting a new piece, I spend time with the paper and begin to visualize possibilities. From there, I can expand the work incrementally. Whether I’m working in an adapted form of pointillism, playing with opacity and hue, or building patterns through repeating shape, the work evolves in its own time. It is an intentionally open process of discovery that seeks to uncover the greatest potential of the basest elements we have at our disposal”. - Kate Snow
