Leigh Palmer
Incident: Large Framed Vertical Luminist Style Oil Landscape Painting

2007

About the Item

Oil on canvas 60 x 48 inches This large vertical painting of an expansive pastoral landscape was created by artist Leigh Palmer a few years after his move to the Hudson River Valley. The image possesses a dramatic, sublime essence, juxtaposing the quiet fields and clouds with the distant "incident" on the horizon, where billowing smoke suggests impending disaster. Palmer's realistic technique captures the many textures of the natural world, from meticulously rendered blades of grass to the clouds that hover gently overhead. The painting floats in a thin, light-wood frame with a wire across the back for instant, professional-quality hanging. About the artist: In 1987, Leigh Palmer moved with his family from suburban Duxbury, Massachusetts, to Tivoli, New York, a quiet town on the Hudson River, north of New York City. His subject matter shifted to the sprawling hills and countryside of the Hudson Valley. “I wanted to respond to the new landscape I was seeing, to catch something of the feeling I had just before dark,” says Palmer. “I took a lot of photographs, but I was happier with the paintings I created from memory.”

  • Garden Chair (Hudson Valley Landscape Painting of Country Wintertime Scene)
    By John Kelly
    Located in Hudson, NY
Hudson Valley landscape painting of a snowy country scene in the wintertime. Oil on linen, 34 x 26 inches John Kelly approaches the Hudson Valley landscape with the eye of an architect and the hand of an impressionist. With intense attention paid to form and light, Kelly nevertheless manages to abstract the landscape just slightly, breaking earth, sky, and atmosphere down to their most elemental qualities. In this painting, a snowy hillside is rendered in shades of white, cream, and blue, contrasted with the warm sienna and umber hue of the trees and a crimson chair. An expansive winter landscape can be glimpsed just beyond the treetops. About the artist: Hudson Valley based painter John Kelly received his education from the Art Institute of Boston and Buffalo State. He has been exhibiting around the northeastern United States since the 1970s. • Peach Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Tiger Lilies, Oil on canvas)
    By Dan Rupe
    Located in Hudson, NY
Peach Lilies (Contemporary Still Life of Vibrant Tiger Lilies, Oil on canvas) by Dan Rupe 22 x 22 inches oil on linen canvas Signed on reverse Artist Dan Rupe paints only from life, his composition ruled by his intuitive sense of formal order. He begins covering his canvas with a deep crimson wash. This ground gives his brilliant pure color , applied with an expressive, direct gesture, an electric charge. No matter how often or how long one looks at a Rupe painting, it is always the present tense. The tone of his palette, the freshness and clarity of primary colors, reflects an optimistic attitude, an intrinsic love of life. In this work, three vibrant peach colored lilies open their blooms amidst bright green grasses. Rupe succeeds at capturing the immediacy of his subjects be it flowers, buildings or people. Read below for an amusing profile written about the artist in 2003: You‘ve likely seen him on the streets of Hudson, seated before his canvas in a multi-colored paint daubed t-shirt and shorts, his straw hat providing shade for all but his tanned forearms and knees. His splattered Technicolor Walkman tape player...

  • Nocturne
    By Paul Jacobsen
    Located in Denver, CO
Inspired by scenes from iconic American landscapes, ranging from arid deserts to lush forests, Jacobsen delves into humanity’s connection to nature and the technology that often mediates that experience. Embedded in the works is the recognition of nature’s immense power in contrast to its quickening fragility. Increasingly, under threat from the continuing rollback of regulations and protections in favor of exploitation for commercial gain, the double-edged sword of technology and the legacy of Westward expansion continue into the present day. For Jacobsen, American parks act as a foil to European colonization and resource extraction. While the creation of National Parks may be one of America’s greatest innovations, in preserving these beautiful and once wild places, they are in practice reduced to roadside attractions. Jacobsen states, “By elevating these picturesque landscapes we also diminish our own place in them. No longer are we participants in the divine dance but instead menacing spectators observing from stadium...
