Circa 1750 English Georgian II period mahogany armchair. The George II period was most noted for its intricate chairs. Like the other Georgian periods, this one was named after the monarch during the time. Under George II, mahogany became the predominant wood used for fine furniture. Many of the styles were symmetrical and had architectural curves, inspired by the Gothic. These works were very expensive and only the rich could afford and buy them. This specific armchair has a frame entirely carved from mahogany, which was a strong and durable wood that was also naturally water resistant and offers natural resistance against pests. The back of the chair has a splat design. Splats were an important element of eighteenth-century English chairs, offering support. It originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...

The Tolix steel stacking stools and steel stacking chairs were originally designed by Xavier Pauchard, better known as Mr. X. In the early 1900’s Xavier perfected a way of protecting sheet metal from rusting and by 1927 had set up a factory selling steel products. The now famous Tolix steel stacking stools and steel stacking chairs were not designed until the 30’s. 1956 was the year that Xavier finally perfected the fully stackable Tolix steel chairs, followed by the Tolix stacking steel stools. They had the ability to be able to stack (12) or more steel chairs and stools safely and that made the Tolix stacking stools and chairs an instant success. We stock the steel Tolix stacking stools (and chairs) in a myriad of colors and in (3) different heights, kitchen island and counter, dining tables and bars. All of the Tolix steel stacking stools and chairs have been stored in a warehouse, or used as showroom samples for many years. Virtually all will have some cosmetic flaws and are priced accordingly. It was popular among the elite and mercantile class of people, due to its excellent material and intricate carvings. Due to the multiple King Georges, each George developed its own look. The George III period is also referred to as the Chippendale style. This period was often characterized by drawing on both the Rococo and Gothic styles.
