Italian Painted Dining Chair, C. 1800

About the Item

This upholstered dining chair wonderfully recreates the delicate, feminine seating of 17th and 18th century European furniture, designed in the style of Venetian Rococo and Louis XV. Dated to the early 19th century, the chair has a padded seat and back of curvilinear shape, set within a sinuously carved wooden frame. The front legs have a slight cabriole shape and beaded edges carved with abstract flourishes. The beaded trim is repeated on the chair backs, decorated with floral swirls and scrolled details. The wooden frame is finished with green paint and a gilt trim, now significantly worn for a wonderfully aged texture. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer. Individual chair dimensions vary slightly. Reupholstered. Green paint color similar to Benjamin Moore #629 #630 & #567. Additional Dimensions: Seat: 17.25"W x 17"D Seat Height: 17.5"H Back Legs: 13.5"W Front Legs: 16.5"W.

Prior to the 10th century, Chinese society eschewed raised seats in favor of mats. The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry and architecture techniques to the human body. In the case of this Yuanyi, or round chair, the flowing crestrail is a direct descendant of the simple armrests that had traditionally supported individuals on mats in their homes. This homage to an ancestral form, combined with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, created an elegant, functional chair that has endured for centuries and inspired many contemporary furniture designers...
