Vintage Ceramic Italian Vase Attributed to Aldo Londi for Bitossi (circa 1960s)
By Aldo Londi
Located in London, GB
Vintage ceramic vase attributed to Aldo Londi for Bitossi (circa 1960s). This is a rare shape and decoration scheme from Bitossi discovered in central Italy. It has a classic rounded form with short neck and wide mouth. The decoration scheme consists of green and blue vertical lines throughout with a tactility due to the presence of granular clay-coloured patches on the exterior shell and the lip which add visual interest. Although some of Londi's forms were based on ancient jug...

Achromatic Fold in White II, a Parian Porcelain Vessel by Steven Edwards
By Steven Edwards
Located in London, GB
'Achromatic Fold in White II' is a unique sculpture by the British artist Steven Edwards, created from parian porcelain. Steven Edwards is a ceramic artist whose work investigates the language of making through the materiality and physicality of clay. Fascinated by process-led making, he uses traditional techniques that provoke unanticipated outcomes, using clay as a medium that sustains the narrative of the making process. The resulting forms embody his interaction and manipulation of the clay using bespoke tools to explore the intrinsic properties of the material. His creative practice starts by purposely placing clay under stress to reveal the natural tension and movement in its surface and form. Throughout the whole making process, he pushes, pulls, compresses and slices the material to provoke a reaction. The final forms are a combination of these making scenarios, translating a theme of duality in their appearance – the contrast of visual distortion and precision, the stillness and movement in form and the surface deception between synthetic and natural. Whilst challenging and pushing his material to the limits, often using clay bodies in ways they are not designed for, Edwards purposely exploits unexpected outcomes. Creating a sense of unease, during the making his clay cracks and buckles, resulting in permanent scars that illustrate the extremes that have been asked of it. Purely aesthetic, these fissures within the surface are an important counter point to the idealised sugary-hued confectionery layered rings. Edwards has exhibited his work at premiere contemporary design and craft shows including British Ceramics...

Large Twin-Handled Vase by Ercole Barovier for Barovier and Toso, 1956
By Barovier&Toso, Ercole Barovier
Located in London, GB
The double handled trumpet shaped vase designed by Ercole Barovier (1889-1974) for Barovier and Toso 1956-57 is set in a layer of clear glass over a layer of white, over a layer oyster colored opaque glass with gold leaf application. The ribbing at the base of vase the stretches out at the mouth tied in by a ringed band. The handles have been skillfully formed by tightly twisting the glass formed into rings applied close to the upper edge of the vase. Barovier made his mark on the company, the glass-works industry and history. The vessel executed by Barovier and Toso shows the technical complexity of a company founded in 1295. Barovier and Toso have held the realm of its glassworks for 750 years in Italy as Vetreria Artistica Barovier & Co. Sèvres Porcelain Garniture, Mounted in Gilt Bronze by Picard
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, Henri Picard
Located in London, GB
With its delightful painted representations of the four seasons and bacchanalian scenes, this ‘bleu celeste’ garniture demonstrates the technical excellence of Sevres factory porcelain. On top of this, the porcelain vases are beautifully decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, expertly cast by Henri Picard, the manufacturer and gilder to Emperor Napoleon III. This garniture is comprised of a central jardinière and a pair of flanking vases. The jardinière features a wide porcelain body, which is topped by a gilt bronze guilloche-patterned neck. This is fitted with two geometric handles, which terminate in cherubs masks. The jardinière body is finely decorated with a continuous painting of putti playing together in a woodland setting. One putti holds the pinecone-tipped staff carried by followers of Bacchus (or Dionysus), the god of wine and ecstasy. Several putti ride on a goat, led on a harness by other putti. This painting is edged with jewelled and parcel gilt decoration, set against a bright ‘bleu celeste’ ground. The jardinière stands on a shaped gilt bronze stem, its top encircled by a band of stiff leaves, its middle by a laurel wreath, and its foot by beading. The jardinière is placed on a square gilt bronze plinth, which is decorated with grape-form finials, hung draperies and foliate motifs, and is set on four beaded toupie feet. The pair of vases are similar to the jardinière in their design. They feature ovoid ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain bodies, which are decorated with continuous paintings of the four seasons, within gilt and jewelled frames. Winter is depicted in a scene showing putti huddled together on a sleigh in a snowy landscape, and autumn by cherubs reaping crops with a sickle. Spring is shown by cherubs wearing flower wreaths and dancing while holding garlands, and summer by putti picking grapes and drinking wine. The vases’ bodies are topped by pointed gilt and jewelled ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain lids, crowned by gilt bronze grape finials. Like the jardinière, the vases are fitted with gilt bronze cherub...

Pair of French Louis XVI Period Gilt Bronze and Agate Vases
By Martin Baffert
Located in London, GB
These truly exceptional and rare antique Louis XVI period vases have been sculpted from agate, a precious and highly sought-after stone. The vases are set on square agate bases with gilt bronze laurel wreath socles. The burgundy and claret agate bodies of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze acanthus leaf ornamentation, and twin lion masks joined by draped swags above. The lids of the vases are mounted with gilt bronze, surmounted by pine cone finials. The vases' design is attributed to the late 18th century, French clockmaker Martin Baffert. Baffert worked with a number of Parisian bronziers including Jean-Nicholas Fremont, Nicolas-Guillaume Jourdan and Francois-Robert Leguel, who assisted in the creation of his designs. This pair of vases is very similar to another pair of vases which Baffert designed, which form part of a clock garniture currently in the Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor. The Rothschild vases...

Abundance II, sand coloured ceramic vessel with shells & flourishes by Jo Taylor
By Jo Taylor
Located in London, GB
'Abundance II' is a unique ceramic sculpture by the British artist, Jo Taylor. Taylor’s inspiration comes from highly decorative architectural features such as ornate plaster ceilings, wrought iron and carved stone. Living near the Georgian city of Bath (UK) provides a rich visual resource, although it can be said that she will seek out such details wherever she goes. Regular visits to our larger cities such as Liverpool (UK) and London (UK) offer ornament that can be experienced on a grander scale with their historic buildings such as the Sefton Park Palm House and the V&A holding many further examples. Further afield the architecture of Gaudi in Barcelona, the palaces of Potsdam and the Villa D''Este in Tivoli have all provided inspiration. In her own words: ‘I enjoy the grand gesture present in large scale relief, the drama of deep shadow, the dialogue between space, structure & ornament. The changing light conditions of bright sunlight, a dull day, dusk or artificial light can affect the contrast and way the structure is perceived’ Taylor’s current practise has been evolving since graduation from her MA at Bath Spa...
