Some of the tools are "new." Ruined old brushes and a variety of scrubbers from hardware stores provide novel ways of putting paint on canvas. Always pushing the boundary of "the tyranny of the mark, the handwriting" Kremer has accomplished this in the past with strategies such as masking and rubber stamping. Now, different tools bring their own idiosyncratic qualities of mark making, expanding the vocabulary with "different strokes." On these canvases, patterns emerge from the coalescence of chance events.

To Herrmann, it is not necessarily about the color, but rather how the viewer feels in response to a particular color. His Color Bomb paintings are a sort of playground or vessel for colors to interact and resonate in a similar way to how music is heard. In this new body of work, Herrmann’s visual vocabulary shifts as elements from the Appalachian Mountains (where he resides) begin to emerge, such as the landscape, animals, seasons, and even sounds.
Kurt Herrmann resides in the mountains of Lock Haven, PA and obtained a BFA from Lock Haven University. Fritz Bultman (1919-1985) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, sculptor, and collagist and a member of the New York School of artists. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Germany to join the Bauhaus at the age of 16. There, he was acquainted with Maria Hofmann, the wife of Hans Hofmann, which initiated a move to New York to study under his guidance. Bultman set himself apart from other Abstract Expressionists with his meticulously organized abstract compositions, use of sculpture, and the adoption of collage as a core practice. In 1950, Fritz Bultman and 27 other distinguished artists signed a letter protesting the conservative nature of the work selected for a forthcoming national exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The signees of this historic letter were identified as, the “Irascibles,” resulting in the majority achieving international acclaim as Abstract Expressionist artists including Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among others.
