Antique Indian Square Cotton Dhurrie with Geometric Border, Circa 1900
Located in Milan, IT
The weaving of flat-woven cotton carpets known as dhurries is cited in Mughal chronicles of the 15th century. Probably one of the earliest forms of floor covering, dhurries were woven in various formats according to their function, which range from bed covers to prayer mats. Most were produced in the northern region of Rajasthan, almost always in the local jails. These were often commissioned for specific areas of the Maharaja's palaces. This very unusual example has a perfectly square format, and was probably commissioned for a specific place of a palace. It's signed by the weaver (N.N. Shah) and it's distinguished for its unique cranberry red open field framed by a stunning geometric border with a pattern reminiscent of antique African textiles.

Fragment of the Antique Tiffany Chinese Carpet with Lotus Flowers
Located in Milan, IT
The only huge carpet known to have left the Imperial Palace in Beijing's Forbidden City, formerly in the Perenchio collection, is the famous Tiffany carpet, 9.99 metres long and once 9.68 metres wide, but since reduced to 7.20 metres wide. The carpet was originally made in three parts to fit around the columns of an unknown hall, and was reportedly last used in China in the private temple of the Empress Dowager Cixi. It was purchased for Louis Comfort Tiffany of New York, who owned it for more than thirty years. The Tiffany carpet is currently attributed to the end of the Ming dynasty and is thought to have been made in the first part of the 17th century. The field pattern is composed of a repeating design of rows of lotus flowers on a soft beige ground, originally deep red, overlaid in the centre with a medallion formed by a blue line edged in ivory and pinched in the four corners. The field is enclosed by two borders on the same colour, which reappears beyond the borders to create a wide band around the outer edge. The inner border is composed of a lattice of stepped squares filled with a swastika, with a large rosette at each intersection. The outer border is a double version of the swastika fret. A section of the field is shown here, and a few other fragments survive. The Tiffany carpet clearly forms a link between the carpets made during the late 16th century and those made in the late 17th century. Examples with an identical flower design or the same specific ‘heavy’ weave are now referred to as the ‘Tiffany’ type after this most important carpet. Other carpets of this type include one in the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City and one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Tiffany type...

Antique Tibetan Monastic Tiger Rug
Located in Milan, IT
Tigers are not native animals of the Tibetan plateau; however their presence in neighbouring countries such as China and India partly explain its depiction, both in a realistic as well as in an abstract fashion, on a specific group of antique Tibetan weavings. The tiger pelt became a symbol of high rank in Tibet, employed almost exclusively on weavings which belonged to the religious as well as secular upper class. Following a series of important exhibitions and publications, rugs with this design have become exceedingly rare and sought-after. On this rare monastic example, the tiger pelt rug...

'River of Ponds' Wool Tapestry Rug by Frank Stella, 1970
By Frank Stella
Located in Milan, IT
Frank Stella is one of the leading figures of the Minimalist movement. Initially influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline, towards the late fifties he moves to New York where he abandons the Expressionist quest for color in favour of flat and Minimalist surfaces, following the work of Barnett Newman and Jasper Johns. He soon inaugurated a series of works emphasizing the painting as an object in itself rather than as a representation of something else. Faithful to Minimalist philosophy, the canvas for him is nothing but a flat surface with color yet suggestive of a third dimension. Towards the early 1960s there was a lot of interest in America in adopting textiles as a medium for artistic expression. In 1962 the World House Galleries in New York organized an exhibition composed of 26 carpets designed by leading Modern Art Masters such as Léger, Mirò and Picasso together with others from the contemporary designer Miriam Leefe. In 1968 the Charles E. Slatkin Galleries in New York opened an exhibition entitled 'American Tapestries', showing the textile artworks of twenty-two Pop Art and Abstract Expressionist artists. These artists were actively involved in the translation of their pictorial language in the textile medium, designing the preparatory cartoons which would then be sent to India for them to be made into weavings. Their interest towards the expressive qualities of three-dimensional flat surfaces found its quintessential expression in the art of the carpet. This motivated a second exhibition in 1970 entitled 'Modern Master Tapestries', where the term 'tapestry' was applied both to wall hangings as well as floor coverings. The aim of this exhibition was to give a modern configuration to the ancient art of weaving. 'River of Ponds...

Vintage Spanish Cuenca Rug with Renaissance Palmette Design
Located in Milan, IT
The court workshop called 'Real Fabrica de Tapices' has been active in Madrid since the 17th century, supplying handmade carpets woven with Turkish (symmetrical) knots to both the court as well as for export. Throughout the 20th century their carpets were either woven with French Savonnerie patterns or, as in this case, with designs taken from the Spanish Renaissance weaving tradition. These carpets are known in the trade with the term of 'Cuenca,' which is the city in southern Spain where they were originally woven in the 15th-17th centuries. Here the pattern, which has a raised pile with respect to the ivory background, is distinguished by an infinite repeat of curvilinear palmettes as seen on 15th-16th century Spanish Alcaraz carpets.
