Swedish architect and furniture designer Axel Einar Hjorth served as the lead designer for Sweden’s Nordiska Kompaniet department store from 1926 to 1938. Stunning set of dining chairs by Jacob Kjær manufactured in 1937. The Danish designer Jacob Kjær created this particular model for the Paris World Fair in 1937. The strong, elegant form of the geometrical backrest with spindles, all executed in the finest Cuban mahogany is absolutely striking. Lightness is created through the slim proportions of the frame which is executed in mahogany. Together with the original cognac niger leather with admirable patina this set of dining chairs is visually striking. A nice decorative touch are the brass rivets on the side of each seating.
Jacob Kjaer (1896-1957) started working as a furniture designer in 1915. From 1918-20 he studied at the Institute of Arts and Crafts Museum in Berlin, then worked in Paris and returned to Copenhagen in 1926. Here, he opened his own workshop. His highly skilled craftsmanship and designs got honored with the Hand Work Medal in 1954.
These items are in good, used condition and show patina and signs of wear and use common for pieces this age. The mahogany type of this piece does not require an export license.

The Hytte series was a continuation of Axel Einar Hjorth's Sportstugemöbler ("sports cabin furnishings"), a collection of pinewood furniture designed for country homes. After Hjorth, designer David Rosén carried on this style, creating several series for Nordiska Kompaniet.
Crafted entirely from pinewood, the chair features club-shaped, tapered legs connected by stretchers, a slatted and slightly curved backrest, and carved armrests. It is versatile and can be used as a desk chair or an elegant side chair.

This “kubbstol” or “kubbestol” is a traditional Scandinavian chair made from a log. The kubbestol was quite common in some districts of Norway from about 1750 to 1960, where it was usually made from logs with significant girth and three to four feet in length.
The tree trunk was hollowed out so that the base (from the seat down) would be cylindrical while the back of the chair continues upward from the seat in a curved shield that makes the chair both snug and comfortable. Most, but not all, kubbestols were decorated with carving, painting, or some combination of the two. This chair has beautiful folk patterns hand carved into it, with visible, raw craftsmanship. Carved and painted decorations would differ from district to district and styles changed over time. While the log is seemingly roughly shaped, this chair is surprisingly comfortable, as functionality has been historically important for Scandinavian furniture makers. The kubbestol was often placed next to the open-hearth fireplace or next to the bed, and it was reserved for the head of the household. Large, impressive farmhouses might have had several richly carved and painted kubbestols as a display of wealth and status.
These days the log chair has become a symbol of Scandinavian roots for many families with ties to Norway, Sweden, or Denmark. The kubbestol is a reminder of our rural heritage and a time when most things in and around the home were made by hand from materials found in nature. The ‘Louisiana’ chair was initially created for the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, by the Danish architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. Inside the modern building complex the chairs were supposed to serve as functional chairs for events. Therefore, Bo and Wohlert had a comfortable chair in mind that is easily stackable. The round seat with off-white suede upholstery and a curved backrest provide comfort.

For sale is a lovely set of four Galvanitas S16 Compass Chairs, arguably the most iconic school chair ever produced. The first to design with sheet metal was obviously Jean Prouve, but in The Netherlands the experiments with these classic compass leg subframes really exploded in the 1950s.
Friso Kramer and Wim Rietveld designed the similar looking Result Chair for Ahrend in the same period, but the S16 turned out to be the most successful —featuring in most schools and canteens of office- and government buildings.
