19th Century Iraqi Silver Hanukkah Lamp Menorah
Located in New York, NY
Handcut strips of silver that have been bent into curvilinear shapes, with semicircle of candle-sockets, complete with drip-pans. A cast-made pair of birds, appearing to be ducks or geese, flank the servant light, while at top as the finial, a large casting of a hen or rooster. While this overall form of lamp is known as hailing from Iraq, we cannot locate any other Iraqi lamps featuring the animals displayed on our example. Birds such as peacocks were widely used in Iraqi and other Middle-Eastern and North African Chanukah lamps, however the usage of the animals featured on our lamp likely have more to do with the surrounding Islamic culture than revealing any meaning in Judaism, which is typical overall for many motifs found on Jewish ritual...

Early 20th Century Shabbat Table Cover from Jerusalem
Located in New York, NY
Folk Art Shabbat table cover, Jerusalem, circa 1900. Embroidered at the four corners with the holy places for Jews in Israel, and with the wailing wall at the center. The Hebrew rectangular text is a traditional song sung by Jews every Friday night upon returning home from synagogue prayer. It signals the arrival of the Jewish Sabbath, welcoming the angels who accompany a person home on the eve of the Sabbath. The words to the song translate as follows: Peace be with you, ministering angels, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. Come in peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. Bless me with peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. Go in peace, messengers of peace, messengers of the Most High, Messengers of the King of Kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He. The Hebrew text around the Wailing Wall scene...

Audrey Werner, Banded Sterling Silver and Agate Earrings, United States, 1998
By Audrey Werner
Located in New York, NY
Audrey Werner has always been interested in the different ways people around the world, and throughout history, have adorned themselves. As a child, she would make jewelry from everything she could find—from beads to rocks, wire, and seeds. In 1992 she enrolled in classes at FIT with an eye toward expanding her knowledge of metal, and, from this point onward, was hooked. Later that same year, she landed an apprenticeship with the jeweler Gregg Wolf. Werner soon became his assistant, a position she would hold for the next two years while establishing her own practice. Another influence on Werner’s work came from a seemingly unexpected place. In 1996 she was sharing a studio with jeweler Philip Crangi...
