19th Century Needlepoint Tallit Bag, Jerualem
Located in New York, NY
An Intricate Jerusalem Textile, made in Jerusalem, 1886. Double-sided large pouch. Wool thread embroidered on cotton net. One side has a lion and stag holding flags reading “Jerusalem” in Hebrew, which flank a crowned Ten Commandments. Titled in Hebrew “Swift as a deer, strong as a lion” (Ethics of the Fathers 5:20). “Jerusalem” is seen in large lettering, atop a pair of birds and flowers. Top scene of the reverse side is titled “Mount of Olives”, amongst a plethora of olive trees, and a cluster of buildings is titled “Chulda the Prophetess”, (where her and others tombs reside). Main scene is titled “The Western Wall”, which features the wall and outer structures with turrets and Cyprus trees. The Hebrew date of “1886” is revealed on the bottom corners. This delicate textile, incredibly vibrant in color after 130 years of being created, is a masterful, exceedingly rare work of art produced in Jerusalem by an unknown woman --- likely quite young, a teenager --- as a gift to an unknown individual. Too complex to be a “tourist trinket”, as we know of one other similarly-made textile that is in the collection of the Israel Museum, and is dated 1876: see the book “Jewish Folk Art: From Biblical Days to Modern Times”, page 122. A clue to where perhaps this was made is in the depiction of the lion and stag holding flags, as they are identical to those featured on the crest of Moses Montefiore. In the 19th century, Montefiore gave enormous sums of money to purchase land for Jewish settlements and establish schools in Palestine. This textile most likely hailed from a school for girls funded by Montefiore, and was made as either a gift for Montefiore himself, or another wealthy donor. As to the actual purpose of this textile, since it is in the form of a large pouch, its intended purpose might have been to hold a tallit (prayer...

Interspersed between some of the words are depictions of foliage and flowers. Large decorative star in which the very center has three interlocking fish. This dish was used for the custom of sending gifts of food to friends or neighbors during Purim. In Central Europe, nuts and candied or dried fruit were the usual treats extended. The astrological symbol of the month of Adar, in which Purim falls out on, are fish, which is why that is featured in the center. 18th century pewter Purim dishes are much more scarce than 18th century pewter Passover...

Anthony Caro
Located in New York, NY
Regarded as the greatest British artist of his generation and represented in museum collections all over the world, Anthony Caro revolutionized sculpture in the 1960s, by taking the radical step of removing the plinth and placing his work directly on the ground not only changed our relationship with the artwork, but the direction of sculpture itself. This beautifully designed book includes a comprehensive survey of Caro's work over a period of more than half a century – ranging from his time as Henry Moore's assistant in the early 1950s right up until his death in 2013. More than fifty of his masterworks are each examined in detail through never before published archival installation images and comments by the artist from the time of production or exhibition. Furthermore, a collection of specially commissioned new documentary photographs by Toby Glanville capture the processes behind the sculptor’s work, from conception to production to installation and exhibition in major exhibitions and installations. A collection of short texts by leading contemporary artists, including Antony Gormley, Liz Larner, Joel Shapiro, Simon Starling, Frank Stella, Rebecca Warren...

Made to Measure Architecture & Interiors Book by Will Meyer and Gray Davis
Located in New York, NY
Made to Measure Meyer Davis, Architecture and Interiors By: Will Meyer and Gray Davis with Dan Shaw Foreword by David Netto “With finishes or forms, Meyer Davis are not afraid to take a chance. As designers, Will and Gray like to play with opposites and conjure beauty by contrast, putting rustic wood in a skyscraper and maybe a little strongly figured marble in a log cabin. The results are consistently chic, unexpected, charismatic—and perhaps most consistently, humane. They are humane modernists. Coming from another designer, most complimentary of all is to say that their style—while original—seems inevitable, and after you see a project by Meyer Davis you say to yourself, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’” —David Netto, from the Foreword. Since forming their practice in 1999, Will Meyer and Gray Davis have designed some two hundred private and public spaces that epitomize the hip luxury style of the twenty‑first century. Their interiors are as dazzling and dramatic as they are comfortable and welcoming—a carefully calibrated balancing act that has become their trademark and won them a loyal clientele from the worlds of fashion, design, hospitality, and cutting‑edge businesses. In Made to Measure, Will Meyer and Gray Davis, in collaboration with Architectural Digest and New York Times contributor Dan Shaw, tell the story of their ascent into the upper echelon of American design and share their firm’s philosophy and process. Illustrated with hundreds of stunning photographs, plans, and drawings, the book explores the symbiosis between their residential and commercial projects, showing how each informs the other and how they’ve redefined modern luxury along the way. Will Meyer was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and studied architecture at Auburn University. Before founding Meyer Davis, he worked for architect Charles Gwathmey, designing homes for clients such as Steven Spielberg and Michael Dell. He lives with his wife and children in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and East Hampton. Gray Davis was born in Tennessee and studied at Auburn University. Before forming Meyer Davis, he worked for designers John Saladino and Thomas O’Brien on homes for clients such as Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani. He lives with his husband in Greenwich Village and Copake, New York, where they build and restore houses. Dan Shaw, a founding editor of the New York Times Style section, is a regular contributor to Architectural Digest and writes the “What I Love” column for the New York Times Sunday Real Estate section. He is cofounder of the online magazine Rural Intelligence and has cowritten several books on design, including In the Pink: Dorothy Draper—America’s Most Fabulous Decorator;Class Act: William Haines—Legendary Hollywood Decorator; Mary McDonald Interiors: The Allure of Style; and Bunny Williams’ Point of View. David Netto, a Los Angeles–based interior and furniture designer and writer, grew up in New York, where he founded his studio in 2000. In 2002 he launched NettoCollection, a pioneering line of modern children’s furniture. From 2010 to 2012 he worked for Deborah...
