Second Bloom Cathy Graham’s Art of the Table Book by Alexis Clark

About the Item

Second Bloom Cathy Graham’s Art of the Table By: Alexis Clark Foreword by Joanna Coles Photographs by Quentin Bacon and Andrew Ingalls People in the know turn to entertaining guru Cathy Graham for advice on gracious living, in particular how to create memorable get-togethers. Second Bloom covers the essentials of party planning that can make every event shine—flowers, paper components, table setting, and meals. Cathy Graham gives inspirational ideas and tips on how to make the most of these decorative elements for any type of occasion. Quentin Bacon’s photographs of diverse settings—a seaside gathering, a casual September cocktail party, or a lively dinner in honor of a friend—show how to achieve winning possibilities that can be pulled off with ease. Approaching life with an aesthetic eye and a sense of whimsy, Cathy Graham has always taken pleasure in arranging flowers from her garden, whether for herself or for renowned dinner parties. She also creates winsome, one-of-kind invitations to these parties that are little works of art in themselves. Graham’s sense of beauty is deliberately off-hand, allowing her to scatter the miniature replicas she has been collecting for decades—of everything from laundry detergent to lingerie—in between the bud vases that adorn her dinner tables. Cathy Graham turns to her passion for enhancing the ordinary occasions of life with renewed zeal, cultivating her garden and working on her sketches of figures from both the fashion and art worlds. In Second Bloom, she shares easy and foolproof entertaining techniques, ranging from artful centerpieces of market fruits and vegetables to popular miniature arrangements of eBay-sourced decorative finds. Accompanied with practical step-by-step photography, Cathy Graham shows how to create lively occasions with simple and original touches. Alexis Clark, a former editor at Town & Country, writes for numerous publications, including Condé Nast Traveler and the New York Times. She is an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Joanna Coles, former editor in chief of Cosmopolitan, is chief content officer of Hearst Publications. Coles lives in New York. Quentin Bacon and Andrew Ingalls are New York–based entertaining and lifestyle photographers. • Tropical Light The Art of A. E. Backus Book by Natasha Kuzmanovic
    Located in New York, NY
Tropical Light The Art of A. E. Backus By: Natasha Kuzmanovic Winner of the 2016 Florida Book Award Gold Medal for Visual Arts Surpassing all potential rivals, artist A. E. Backus (1906–1990) developed a masterful aesthetic for portraying Florida’s lush tropical landscape, and his works became the definitive images of the state. Displaying a Backus painting quickly became a mark of distinction for a certain set of affluent Floridians. Defining his own artistic roots as “part Cracker [a hardy, early Florida pioneer] and part Monet,” Backus’s primary subject matter was tropical nature as defined by light, which he rendered using complementary colors. His avant‑garde use of a palette knife to create entire compositions produced paintings that combined a sensitive observation of nature with gestural paint application. So skillful was Backus at depicting the light and atmosphere of a particular locale that the season and exact time of day, to the hour, can be identified in most of his works. Backus excelled at capturing the essence of traditional Florida: rustic fishing camps, magnificent beaches, tidal rivers fringed with palms and mangroves, and the abrupt changes in the weather that characterize Florida’s tropical light to both natives and visitors. Besides his exceptional artistic talent, Backus also possessed an extraordinary humanitarian spirit. He drew no lines of distinction between young and old, rich and poor, black and white, and his studio door in Fort Pierce was open to all. He developed enduring friendships with black musicians, artists, and authors, including Zora Neale Hurston, one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. The circle of African‑American artists known as the Highwaymen...
