The Art Deco Poster Book by William Crouse

About the Item

The Art Deco Poster By: William Crouse Introduction by Alastair Duncan Posters of the Art Deco period, which once graced billboards and walls to advertise every variety of product, service, entertainment, or political cause, are today prized for the richness of their design and ingenuity; they offer inspiration for graphic designers and are highly collectible. Now, William Crouse, a long-time poster aficionado and collector, has selected more than 300 of the most sought-after examples of poster art created between the World Wars to include in this definitive volume. Organized thematically (aviation, communication, fashion, etc.), The Art Deco Poster presents a jaunty cavalcade of international poster design, and includes rare and unique examples by masters of the art form, including Nizzoli, Cassandre, and Beall. Each poster—superbly photographed under carefully controlled conditions—is accompanied by an informative caption that addresses the aesthetic, sociological, economic, and/or political context of the image. The book includes an introduction by well-known Art Deco specialist Alastair Duncan. William W. Crouse is a major collector of 20th-century posters. Alastair Duncan was for many years an officer and consultant of Christie’s, New York, and is now an independent consultant on the decorative arts of the 19th and 20th centuries. • Tropical Light The Art of A. E. Backus Book by Natasha Kuzmanovic
    Located in New York, NY
Tropical Light The Art of A. E. Backus By: Natasha Kuzmanovic Winner of the 2016 Florida Book Award Gold Medal for Visual Arts Surpassing all potential rivals, artist A. E. Backus (1906–1990) developed a masterful aesthetic for portraying Florida’s lush tropical landscape, and his works became the definitive images of the state. Displaying a Backus painting quickly became a mark of distinction for a certain set of affluent Floridians. Defining his own artistic roots as “part Cracker [a hardy, early Florida pioneer] and part Monet,” Backus’s primary subject matter was tropical nature as defined by light, which he rendered using complementary colors. His avant‑garde use of a palette knife to create entire compositions produced paintings that combined a sensitive observation of nature with gestural paint application. So skillful was Backus at depicting the light and atmosphere of a particular locale that the season and exact time of day, to the hour, can be identified in most of his works. Backus excelled at capturing the essence of traditional Florida: rustic fishing camps, magnificent beaches, tidal rivers fringed with palms and mangroves, and the abrupt changes in the weather that characterize Florida’s tropical light to both natives and visitors. Besides his exceptional artistic talent, Backus also possessed an extraordinary humanitarian spirit. He drew no lines of distinction between young and old, rich and poor, black and white, and his studio door in Fort Pierce was open to all. He developed enduring friendships with black musicians, artists, and authors, including Zora Neale Hurston, one of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. The circle of African‑American artists known as the Highwaymen...

  • The Cars in Posters, French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007
    By Modern History
    Located in Atlanta, GA
L'Auto s'affiche (The Cars in Posters), French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007. Prefaced by Louis Schweitzer, this book unveils a formidable collection of graphic posters illustrating automobile history. This retrospective allows an understanding of artistic trends and the evolution of advertising while discovering manufacturers, luxury models, casual vehicles, trucks, coaches, and other racing cars. The golden age of the graphic poster began in 1880 in the railway tourism sector. The photographic poster has been successful and has dominated the market since the 1970s. The poster is related to the development of the automobile industry at the beginning of the 20th century. It expresses an advertising message but also becomes a mode of artistic expression in its own right. Thanks to the talent of artists like Pal, Mich, Vincent, Mauzan, Geo Ham, Kow, Cassandre, Savignac, and many others, the poster strikes the imagination of passers-by. It entertains, inspires dreams, and innovates. The graphic print expresses all the major artistic trends, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. It is paradoxical to note that the woman's omnipresence in the image largely contributed to the birth of the myth of the Automobile. After World War I, the automotive landscape changed a lot. The 416 makes counted around 1910 disappeared for different reasons: non-competitiveness of assemblers, too rapid technical development, and damage correlated with the conflict. On the other hand, new brands resulting, in particular, from the formidable evolution of military aviation from 1915 to 1919 appear: Voisin, Farman, and Hotchkiss wanted to branch out from machine guns. Curiously, the big car...
