This necklace is constructed from rolled gold - it is stamped 'ROLLED GOLD SP' on the chain. It features a delicate cable chain and a pendant. The pendant has a typically linear and bold Jugendstil design. It is articulated, so that it moves with the wearer and is detailed with a bezel set, faceted, red glass stone and two bezel set, open back mounted, triangular cut, faceted purple glass stones. The necklace fastens with a bolt ring. The chain measures 42cm and the pendant measures 6.5cm x 2cm.
A Short History...
The term Jugendstil, meaning "Young Style," was derived from the magazine Die Jugend and describes an art and design movement which took place in Germany and Austria from c.1896 through to c.1915. Taking place at the same time as the Art Nouveau movement, which was inspired by the natural world, Jugendstil was also heavily influenced by organic shapes but contrasted them with geometric forms resulting in very stylised designs. Late Edwardian era the necklace is a rolo link chain in gold plated brass, the chain intercepted with oval cut purple paste stones.
Such a pretty antique necklace, most of the plating has worn away giving it a more rustic look but it still has so much to give.
The chain is nice length and easily passes over the head but it has a spring ring fastener too.
Condition:
Fair used condition overall, signs of use and wear commensurate with age, loss of wear to the plating, some wear to the paste.

HISTORY
This unique design features two youthful male heads positioned side by side, one upright and the other inverted. This captivating motif has been variously interpreted as representing the Dioscuri, the rising and setting sun, or the two branches of the river Danube.
The Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, epitomised courage and bravery and were especially revered by soldiers and cavalry. Renowned as protectors of sailors, they were believed to have the power to calm seas and still winds. In Rome, their legendary intervention at the Battle of Lake Regillus in 496 B.C. secured a pivotal victory for the Romans against the Latins. Their legacy was celebrated with annual games featuring horse racing on January 27th, highlighting their strong association with horsemanship.
The constellation Gemini is intrinsically linked to the Dioscuri. Sharing the same mother, Leda, Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, while Pollux was the divine offspring of Zeus. Together, they joined Jason on the Argo and famously saved the ship from a deadly storm. When Castor perished in battle, Pollux implored Zeus to reunite them.
