Frank Nelson Wilcox (October 3, 1887 – April 17, 1964) was a modernist American artist and a master of watercolor. Wilcox is described as the "Dean of Cleveland School painters," though some sources give this appellation to Henry Keller or Frederick Gottwald. Wilcox was born on October 3, 1887 to Frank Nelson Wilcox, Sr. and Jessie Fremont Snow Wilcox at 61 Linwood Street in Cleveland, Ohio. His father, a prominent lawyer, died at home in 1904 shortly before Wilcox' 17th birthday. His brother, lawyer and publisher Owen N. Wilcox, was president of the Gates Legal Publishing Company or The Gates Press. His sister Ruth Wilcox was a respected librarian.
In 1906 Wilcox enrolled from the Cleveland School of Art under the tutelage of Henry Keller, Louis Rorimer, and Frederick Gottwald. He also attended Keller's Berlin Heights summer school from 1909. After graduating in 1910, Wilcox traveled and studied in Europe, sometimes dropping by Académie Colarossi in the evening to sketch the model or the other students at their easels, where he was influenced by French impressionism. Wilcox was influenced by Keller's innovative watercolor techniques, and from 1910 to 1916 they experimented together with impressionism and post-impressionism. Wilcox soon developed his own signature style in the American Scene or Regionalist tradition of the early 20th century. He joined the Cleveland School of Art faculty in 1913. Among his students were Lawrence Edwin Blazey, Carl Gaertner, Paul Travis, and Charles E. Burchfield. Around this time Wilcox became associated with Cowan Pottery.
In 1916 Wilcox married fellow artist Florence Bard, and they spent most of their honeymoon painting in Berlin Heights with Keller. They had one daughter, Mary. In 1918 he joined the Cleveland Society of Artists, a conservative counter to the Bohemian Kokoon Arts Club, and would later serve as its president. He also began teaching night school at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute at this time, and taught briefly at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Wilcox wrote and illustrated Ohio Indian Trails in 1933, which was favorably reviewed by the New York Times in 1934. This book was edited and reprinted in 1970 by William A. McGill. McGill also edited and reprinted Wilcox' Canals of the Old Northwest in 1969. Wilcox also wrote, illustrated, and published Weather Wisdom in 1949, a limited edition (50 copies) of twenty-four serigraphs (silk screen prints) accompanied by commentary "based upon familiar weather observations commonly made by people living in the country."
Wilcox displayed over 250 works at Cleveland's annual May Show. He received numerous awards, including the Penton Medal for as The Omnibus, Paris (1920), Fish Tug on Lake Erie (1921), Blacksmith Shop (1922), and The Gravel Pit (1922). Original early modernist india ink drawing with brushwork by the well known American artist, Adolf Arthur Dehn. Signed by the artist, titled and dated 1925 lower right. Dehn spent his early career traveling and working in Europe during the three year time period 1922 to 1925 when this drawing was done in France. The Chateau d’Auguebelette build in the fourteen century as a fort sits high on the mountain range to the left. Condition is very good. Light toning of paper consistent with age. Under glass, not examined out of frame. The artwork is housed in a antique style silver leaf contemporary frame 16.25 by 22 inches.
Adolf Dehn, painter, printmaker, author, illustrator and teacher, was born Adolph Arthur Dehn in Waterville, Minnesota on November 22, 1895. He was valedictorian of his graduating class at Waterville High School and attended the Minneapolis School of Art between 1914 and 1917. Dehn studied for a year at the Art Students League in New York beginning in 1919. While in New York he met Boardman Robinson who introduced him to the master printer, George Miller. The first exhibition of Dehn's lithographs was held at the Weyhe Gallery in New York City in 1921 and the Weyhe Gallery mounted his first solo exhibition in 1923.
Throughout is life Dehn was a frequent visitor to Europe, staying for various periods of time. Upon his return from a three-year stay in Europe in 1925, he changed the spelling of his first name to Adolf.
In 1934, Dehn established the Adolf Dehn Print Club and was one of the founder-member artists of Associated American Artists in New York. He was selected by Prints magazine as one of the ten best printmakers in the United States in 1936 and the following year he worked in the graphic arts division of the Federal Art Project. He taught summers at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri (1938) and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (1940-1942).

Clausen was a very well respected British artist based in London in the late 19th & early 20th century, stylistically he managed to meld Romanticism and Impressionism with great success. This very handsome drawing depicts a study of two male heads, most likely related to the 1905 painting "Binding Sheaves" or another harvest painting from that period.
This work of art was exhibited & sold in 1976 by the "New Grafton Gallery 42 Old Bond Street London W1", exhibition to the verso, the gallery specialized in showing major 20th century British artists.

Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington & Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). preserve reproduction and publication rights. 9 1/2 x 15 1/2
inches, plus margins of about 1/2 inch. In excellent condition.
The "Orthophonic Victrola," introduced in 1925, was the first
electric record player sold commercially. In the drawing it is
seen at the left, with the host changing a record. The rest of
the drawing reveals that listening to music was not the primary
activity of the "orthophonic evening."
The following is quoted from The Pillips Collection's biography
of Kuhn:
Walt Kuhn is remembered as an early promoter of modern art in
America. He was not only a well-known painter, but also a
cartoonist, sculptor, printmaker, writer, teacher, and producer
of vaudeville shows. Born in 1877, Kuhn grew up in Brooklyn,
where he received his education in private schools until he was
sixteen. In 1899 he ventured to San Francisco to work as a
cartoonist for The Wasp, a political and literary weekly. In 1901
Kuhn traveled to Europe for formal art training at the Académie
Colarossi in Paris and later at the Munich Academy. Returning to
New York in 1903, he established a studio in Manhattan and helped
arrange the 1910 Exhibition of Independent Artists. He was a
founding member and officer of the Association of American
Painters and Sculptors, the organization responsible for mounting
the Armory Show of 1913, and in this role traveled through Europe
in 1912 looking at art and helping to select works to be
exhibited. Seeing paintings by Cézanne, Derain, Dufy, Pascin, and
the cubists affected his style, and throughout the teens and
early twenties Kuhn experimented with fauve colors, using blocks
of color akin to Cézanne and with cubist space, integrating
abstracted forms into the space of the picture plane. Finally, he
developed his own painting style characterized by solid,
sculptural depictions of single figures.

John Thomas Young Gilroy (30 May 1898 – 11 April 1985) was an English artist and illustrator, best known for his advertising posters for Guinness, the Irish stout. He signed many of his works, simply, "Gilroy".
Born in Whitley Bay, Northumberland, England, Gilroy attended Durham University until his studies were interrupted by World War I, during which he served with the Royal Field Artillery. He resumed studying at the Royal College of Art in London, where he remained as a teacher. He taught at Camberwell College of Arts.[1]
In 1925, he gained employment at S.H. Benson's advertising agency, where he created the iconic advertisement art for Guinness featuring the Zoo Keeper and animals enjoying Guinness.[2] He worked with Dorothy L. Sayers.[3] He was also an accomplished portrait painter, numbering Royalty, Politicians, Actors and many others amongst his sitters.
