Art Subject: Face
Un Rassemblement - Figurative Drawing
By Milo Quam
Located in Soquel, CA
Wonderfully provocative sketch drawing of a gathering of men and women in pencil by outsider artist Mylo Quam (American, 1941-1996). Signed lower right. Presented in giltwood frame with black mat under glass. Image size: 8.25"H x 10.50"W. A long-time Woodstock area resident, Mylo Quam was a self-taught painter and draughtsman whose provocative figural work has been compared to Renaissance painters Sandro Botticelli and Hieronymous Bosch, as well as to twentieth-century artists Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. Quam was an avid reader who derived inspiration from such varied arenas as Shakespeare, the occult, the Bible, Eastern and Western mythology, politics, and popular culture. "I look at everything," the artist was quoted as saying in 1990. "I read the comic pages. Anything visual. There's very little I don't think is a subject for art." Born in North Dakota, Quam studied Greek language and other classical subjects at Brandeis, Boston, and New York Universities, and worked as a translator of Greek plays while just 17 years old. After a successful career as an actor that included numerous Off-Broadway performances and a leading role in the 1968 Broadway production of Royal Hunt of the Sun, Quam turned his focus to painting. His first one-man exhibition was at the Boatman Gallery, NYC in 1969 and was followed by twenty solo shows over the course of his career at venues including Gallery A, Flynn Gallery, CFM Gallery, Brewster Gallery, Imperial Gallery, Runyon Winchell Gallery and the Gallery of Erotic Art, all in New York City. Quam's work was also exhibited at the John Pense Gallery in San Francisco, the Clark-Whitney Gallery in Massachusetts, the Barrett House and Desmond Weiss Galleries in Poughkeepsie, and for many years at the Ann Leonard Gallery in Woodstock. Quam's paintings were exhibited internationally, as well, notably in a solo exhibition in Haiti-- the first by an American artist in that country. In addition, he was one of four artists to represent the United States in La Bienalle di Venezia, Italia of 1986. As a young man, Quam designed sets and/or costumes for the Actor's Playhouse in New York City, the Lucas Hovig Ballet Company, and the Opera Municipal de Marseilles, France. He also created illustrations for The Story of O...

Giovanni Boldini drawing of a lady, Italian 19th Century
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Giovanni Boldini (Italian, 1842-1931) Etude de femme au ruban noir Signed with atelier stamp (lower left), further inscribed, signed and dated by Emilia Boldini (the artist’s wife) `no 77 le_ atelier Boldini. Emilia Boldini Carbona 1931’ (on the reverse) Black crayon on paper 11.7/8 x 8.7/8 in. (30 x 22.5 cm.) Emilia’s inscription on the reverse from the year of his death. Giovanni Boldini was an Italian genre and portrait painter who lived and worked in Paris for most of his career. According to Time magazine, he was known as the "Master of Swish" because of his flowing style, exemplified by the confident strokes in this fine example. Boldini was born in Ferrara, the son of a painter of religious subjects, and in 1862 went to Florence for six years to study and pursue painting. He only infrequently attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, but in Florence, met other realist painters known as the Macchiaioli, who were Italian precursors to Impressionism. Their influence is seen in Boldini's landscapes which show his spontaneous response to nature, although it is for his portraits that he became best known. Moving to London, Boldini attained success as a portraitist, painting notable members of society including Lady Holland and the Duchess of Westminster...

"Three Ribbon Heads", Art Deco Hand Colored Lithograph by John Luke Eastman 1984
Located in Soquel, CA
"Three Ribbon Heads", Art Deco Female Figurative by John Luke Eastman. 1984 Beautiful mid-1980's hand colored Art Deco style lithograph by Southern California artist John Luke Eastman (American, b.1929). In this 1984 version of Eastman's "Three Ribbon Heads", a delicate flowing line drawing of three consecutive women's faces in profile are framed by ribbons in a circular composition. As in many of the artist's works, Eastman captions the piece with the following phrase: " In this life we have three lasting qualities...faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of them is love." Hand signed and dated in pencil lower right, "John L. Eastman 84" artists proof. Displayed in a light grey mat and new art deco-style giltwood frame. Paper size: 20"H x 16"W. Framed size: 19.5"H x 23.25"W x 1"D. John Luke Eastman is a Southern California artist with a unique style. A graduate of UCLA with a degree in graphic arts, he was successful fashion illustrator and art director for prestigious department store in L. A. before turning his full attention to fine art. Over the part decade he has created and mastered the unique style that is currently found in his limited edition silk-screen graphics. A versatile artist, who has illustrated many record and book covers he refers to his style as "the 5th dimension" or "beautiful distortion". The qualities he seeks to impart through his works are fluidity of movement, a feeling of spatiality, weightlessness and beautiful color. His artworks have been in a lot of shows across the country. He recently had show at Celux (Louis Vuitton membership...

Holiday End - Color Pencil Drawing, Surreal Christmas Scene, Framed
Located in Chicago, IL
The artist is a master at storytelling. He sets the stage for the viewer to bring the events to a particular scene. Here, the artist presents us with a curious scene. The Holidays are over and the thought of getting rid of the tree is always a chore. Hrehov has chosen to show how to quickly eliminate the tree (and everything around it!). His sense of humor comes out in this small, highly detailed drawing that is matted and framed measuring 14.5 x 16 inches. "Jimi Hendrix original Color Pencil sketch" Fillmore East the very first version
Located in Southampton, NY
A new coffee table book has just been released titled "Poster Child" The Psychedelic Art & Technicolor Life of David Edward Byrd. This original drawing is featured on page 61 of the book. David Byrd created some of the most memorable Classic Theatre and Rock and Roll images from the 1960s and 70s. David created ALL of the Art for Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, including their Program covers and Rock posters, the art for Jimi Hendrix’s first Fillmore East appearance, The Rolling Stones 1969 World Tour art, The Who’s Performance of Tommy at the New York Metropolitan Opera House and The Fillmore, and The Grateful Dead Swell Dance Concert to name only a few. He also created the poster art for the original location of the 1969 Woodstock music festival . His memorable images were also used for classic Broadway shows like Godspell, Follies and Jesus Christ Superstar to mention only a few. These museum quality drawings are rarely made available for sale, they are not only wonderful rare works of art, but are truly historically important works in the field of Theatre and Rock and Roll collecting. It has been framed with archival double matting. David Byrd's poster art is in many museum collections, including : The Louvre, in Paris, Victoria & Albert in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Featured in this listing is the Original Color pencil Sketch created in 2006 by David Byrd prior to working on the finished painting which we also have available for sale. This drawing created in 2006 is based on David's very first original 1968 drawing for Hendrix's very first Fillmore East concert. It only featured Hendrix, and Bill Graham asked David if he could add the other two members of The Experience, which became the famous Fillmore East orange poster that featured all three members of the Experience. I included and image in this listing of the original pencil drawing from 1968 where you can see Bill requesting all three members to be included in the poster art. In this color rendering, David Byrd indicates two possible color choices for the poster in this sketch by listing the color numbers. He shows one half with one color combination and the other half with a different color combination. That was so that Bill Graham could choose which colors he preferred if the original 1968 poster art was to use this image. A great original color drawing that David Byrd created to show the colors of the first version of the 1968 Hendrix poster...

Reflection #1, Charcoal Drawing of a Man Gazing Down, Wearing a Bow Tie
Located in Chicago, IL
The dramatic, rich markings left by charcoal appear in the earliest primitive cave painting of early humans, which are believed to have been drawn with the charcoal created from burnt sticks. Of the various kinds of charcoal available today, David Becker often chooses vine charcoal which provides a smooth, softer line. Able to produce lines with either a subtle or strong quality, charcoal is wildly versatile, allowing Becker to approach texture, shading and tone with ease. He is able to capture both gestures and emotions with an intuitive mixture of the soft and the dark.
