"For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. “With just a few strokes of his brush he conjures up an entire world. James Coignard extends the boundaries between concrete and abstract. He knows how to create chromatic melodies that shift in timbre from cobalt blue to blood red. His pictures are an artistic epicentre where lines, letters and numbers meld with vigorous swashes of colour.” That is how the writer Johan Persson has described the artist’s paintings. With this exhibition we honour James Coignard, showing some of his last carborundum engravings and paintings as well as presenting the book “L’œuvre gravé de James Coignard” volume VI. In this edition, we have gathered together all the engravings that James Coignard produced between June 2005 and his decease, on 7 March 2008. Behind him he left many fond memories and a life’s work as a great artist. James Coignard’s principal modes of expression were oil on canvas and gravure au carborundum, but also in bronze and glass sculptures as well as in ceramics. His work has been shown on more than 400 exhibitions, primarily in Central Europe and Scandinavia, but also in Canada and the USA. His first Swedish exhibition was at Malmö Museum in 1956. The early 1970s saw the start of a long-term liaison with Galleri Östermalm in Stockholm, owned by Editions Sonet. Deborah Dancy is an abstract artist. Her paintings and drawings are sensuous provocations beset with marks that guide, then abruptly collide into confrontational slabs of color. There is an atmosphere of complex but urgent tension in her work, as she builds tangential linear demarcations, and abutting shapes, that provoke, entice and disrupt; -taking us everywhere and nowhere. From densely painted forms to more minimally declared images, Dancy’s work operates in the recognition that meanderings, intentional and accidental declarations are best when the beautiful and the disconcerting exist simultaneously.
Dancy was born in Bessemer, Alabama and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She earned BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MS and an MFA from Illinois State University. She is the recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Yaddo Fellow, and a National Endowment of the Arts NEFA award. Charles C. Stewart (1922-2011) was born in Toledo, Ohio. From an early age he had a natural talent for the arts, so much so that during his school years, his teachers encouraged him to take classes at the Toledo Museum. He studied there for eight years.
During World War II, he served with the tank destroyers in five campaigns. When he returned from the war, he studied art and sculpture at the Art Student's League in New York. He then went to Mexico for eight months to study and paint. While in Mexico, he fell in love with the country, its people and arts, vowing one day to return and live.
In 1947, Stewart moved to Taos, New Mexico to start his career. He opened a frame shop and small studio and studied at the Taos Valley Art School under Louis Ribak. In 1949, he opened his own gallery. He taught art and sculpture at the Taos Art Association and at Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as teaching private students.
