A lovely genre painting of a woman with a dog outside a country house by Sydney Kendrick. A young woman can be seen dressed for a wintry day in a green velvet cloak over a brown dress and holds a fur muffler in her hands. She is shown walking down the snow covered stone steps of a country house followed by a black and tan rough collie.
Sydney Percy Kendrick was born on 17 September, 1874. Little is known about his early life, however he is believed to have studied art in Paris. By the early 1900’s he was living in London where he set up a studio at 3D Warwick Avenue, Maida Vale known as Fulthorpe Studios.
He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1903 and later at the New Society of Artists in Suffolk Street. George Lafayette Clough was born September 18, 1824, in Auburn, New York, and was that city's leading landscapist and, known as a Hudson River School painter, became Auburn's most noted resident painter of the mid-century. His mother was widowed shortly after his birth, and he was raised without paternal influence. He had little formal education and was employed by the age of ten. By age fifteen he had taken up painting, and his first and informal art influence came from the portraitist, Randall Palmer.

The sitter is likely to have been from an upper class or aristocratic family in court circles, who were the main source of Lely`s patronage. The simple composition serves to highlight the beauty of the sitter through portraying her pale decolletage and complexion, set against the gentle gaze of her blue eyes, the soft blush of her cheeks and her full red lips.
Peter Lely (1618-1680) was originally of dutch origin and became Principle Painter to the King in 1661, following in the footsteps of Van Dyck who had died in 1641. He dominated the portrait painting scene in England for over 20 years, creating a distinctive 'court look' in his work which had a strong influence on many other artists. He had an extremely successful and popular portrait practice which meant that he soon had to develop production methods that could accommodate the high demand for portraits, and also for copies and versions of them which were given as gifts to family and courtiers. The use of studio assistants was a common practice for busy artists and as with Van Dyck, Lely is known to have used specialist assistants to execute particular parts of his paintings.
