About the Item

'The New Arrival' A Mother with her Children A first class example of Pothast's work. The faces are beautifully done with fantastic light cascading into the room. The mother is sharing a beautiful moment showing the young baby to the two children. Canvas Size: 31 x 39" (80 x 100cm) Outside Frame Size: 40 x 48" (102 x 122cm) Bernard Pothast 1882 - 1966 Although born in Belgium in 1882, Bernard Pothast was the son of a well-known Dutch portrait painter. In his youth Bernard was encouraged to visit his father’s workshop where he learnt all the technical points of production. After he had finished school his father sent him to study the work of the Dutch Masters in museums and galleries. Eventually Bernard became a pupil at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie between 1904 and 1907 and there he was particularly influenced by the artist A. Allebe, who was a professor at the school. He successful and was awarded the Royal Bursary for study abroad, he chose Paris and spent a year at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Although successful in Paris he soon began to miss the atmosphere of Holland and returned to the circle of artists who were taking up the mantle of The Dutch Masters. Pothast was very much a follower of the Hague School who were the Dutch equivalent of the French Impressionists. He specialised in painting interior scenes with children, often depicting toys and other objects which are of both an historical and artistic interest. The characters in Pothast’s paintings are imbued with virtue and a gentle strength. Bernard Pothast's poignant paintings of peasant life gained popularity during his lifetime and remain popular today. This signed oil on canvas shows Pothast’s great skill in capturing warm light built up in thick layers of impasto paint. It has been suggested that his models were his wife and children and it is tempting to accept this as true when a likeness of models can be detected throughout his works. The artist's use of light was very special. His figures are often bathed in a warm glowing light which usually emanates from a window and gives an added intimacy to the scene. Pothast died in Laren on 1st February 1966. His paintings continue to be very popular and can be found in private collections throughout the world.

  • 'Attilla' A Chestnut Horse in a Stable
    By John Frederick Herring Sr.
    Located in St. Albans, GB
Canvas Size: 28 x 36" (71 x 91cm) Outside Frame Size 36 x 44" (91 x 111cm) It is signed on the middle right on the wooden window. This is a stunning painting of a racehorse signed and dated J F Herring Sen 1842. The horse is named above the water trough as Attilla. As Herring was a renowned painter of racehorses it is likely that this was done for a wealthy patron who owned several. Although he painted many of the winners of the St. Ledger Cup Attilla was not one of these. Free carriage worldwide John Frederick HERRING Snr 1795 – 1865 A sporting painter, born in Surrey of American/Dutch extraction. At first he was a sign and coach painter. He then worked as a stable boy and coachman in Yorkshire until with the help of patrons he was able to study with Abraham Cooper RA, the only art education he appears to have had. He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’. He sometimes collaborated with his three sons, J.F.Jnr, Benjamin Jnr and Charles. He also collaborated with James Pollard on a number of racing scenes inc. ‘The Doncaster Gold Cup’, 1838, ‘The Emperor of Russia’s Cup at Ascot’ 1845 and ‘The Dead Heat for the Doncaster Great St. Ledger’ 1849 Herring painted 33 successive winners of the St. Ledger and not surprisingly lived a large part of his life in the Doncaster area before settling in Newmarket in 1830 and then in London in 1835. He suffered serious financial difficulties after his move to London which, thanks to a great friend and patron William Taylor Copeland (1797 – 1868) head of the Spode Porcelain factory at Stoke on Trent, was resolved. He painted many pictures of the Copeland family, some of which were adapted and used as designs on the Spode china...
