About

Jean-Raymond Hippolyte Lazerges was born in France in 1817, making him one of the early Orientalists of the nineteenth century. He was a student of David d'Angers and François Bouchot and exhibited at the Salon from 1840 to 1887. His paintings were in great demand in France and he decorated many public buildings and churches. These commissions included the creation of large paintings for the Sorbonne in Paris and Narbonne and Rheims Cathedral. Lazerges first visited Algeria in 1842 and moved there in 1861 after which he painted mainly scenes of Algerian life. As the titles of his later paintings indicate, he clearly experienced life in Algeria first hand. Lazerges was captivated by his surroundings, using Algeria as a muse for his poetry, music, and paintings.
