Abstract Figurative Paintings

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

"Abstract Composition 3" Abstract Oil Painting 24" x 18" inch by Youssef Sida Signed and dated 1990 Youssef Sida 1922-1994 Born in 1922 in Damietta, and in 1945 he got his degree from the Higher Institute of Educational Art. In 1947, he participated in establishing the influential Group of Modern Art. In 1949 he participated in the Egyptian exhibition in Paris. In 1950, he received the Full Bright award for studying art at Minnesota University. He then studied at Colombia University in NY and began exhibiting his work in NY and Minnesota from 1951-1952. He participated in 1953 in the Biennale of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Upon returning to Egypt in 1954, he became active in local and international exhibitions. In 1961, he was sent by the Egyptian government to receive his Ph.D. from Columbus University, Ohio. After, he started exhibiting his work in Columbus and Washington DC. Y.Sida’s work at the start was mainly dealing with popular Egyptian themes. We can distinguish Sida’s work through his power of using primary colors in its purest form directly in the tubes without being mixed with other colors. Also, we can notice in his work a tendency towards the qualities and techniques of children’s art. In his later years, Sida began experimenting with Arabic Calligraphy by concentrating on the forms and shapes that are dominant in the popular Egyptian motives and décor. We can witness the dynamism in his Arabic calligraphy work. Sida is also known for his huge murals...

In May 2017, Masha Iv's solo exhibition "Adventures in the Mountains" was held in Paris. Since 2012, Masha Iv is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. Artists statement: The key themes of my works are the study of the natural landscape of our planet, drawing attention to environmental issues and the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. I work in mixed techniques, as I like to experiment with paints on different bases and observe how they interact with each other. Such experiments often lead me to surprising results. I most often find the phrases and captions integrated into my works in in-flight magazines, glossies, advertising campaigns and other print media. More precisely, the right phrases find me on their own at the right time when I'm working on a particular painting. Glimpsed phrases are often stored in our subconscious and sometimes serve as a trigger or set a vector of movement. Motivational phrases in paintings are like beacons that point in the right direction so as not to veer off course. Education 1993-2003 Art school 2003-2006 College of Art and Crafts of the Carl Faberge 2006-2010 Russian Correspondence Institute of Textile and Light Industry 2007 "Free Workshops" at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art Group Exhibitions 2023 «Gift under the tree» «Zdes na Taganke». Sundown
Located in London, Chelsea
This contemporary painting by Chin H Shin is part of his 'Urban Jungle' series which focuses on capturing the vibrant character of New York City. The dynamic spirit of the brushwork and gesture involved in this artwork romantisises on the magic of an area that is bathed in rich history and culture. Incorporated is a mystical and mysterious palette of fiery red hues, reflective of sunset colours. An innovative approach to creating an impression of colour and light suffuses a lyricism, creating a visual image that is poetically woven together in illuminating tones. A clear influence of Korean calligraphy combined with Expressionism is synergised in this piece, producing a unique impression of the metrapolis. An everyday cityscape is transformed as the artist demonstrates merging of abstraction and figuration to describe the bright artificial glow and architectural giants that are distinctive to the place. This original work of art is painted in oils on canvas, hand signed by the artist and ready to be displayed. Artist Biography In his native South Korea, Chin H. Shin began studying the fundamentals of fine art from a young age. He trained in the basic principles of oil painting and watercolour, but still desiring more, Shin immigrated to the United States in pursuit of further education in the fine arts. In New York, he studied the Western tradition, familiarizing himself with the works of masters such as Camille Corot and Edward Hopper -- both of whom would continue to serve as sources of inspiration for Shin to this day. After his studies, Shin earned his Masters of Fine Art from Long Island University. In most recent years, Shin has dedicated his focus on New York cityscapes. The expressiveness of New York City -- its brilliant culture, vast history, and even the very streets of the metropolis -- has continued to inform his work as he develops his artistic voice. Shin’s ultimate goal is to transform the scenes of daily life into a kind of visual poetry through his technical mastery of breaking down color and light. That visual poetry is the basis of a new kind of art form which Shin hopes to create and convey, influenced by Korean calligraphy and the bold brushstrokes of Expressionism.  Shin remains active in the art scene, showcasing his work at various art galleries including the Transform Gallery in New York City, Williams Gallery in New Jersey, Bucks County Gallery of Art in Pennsylvania, the Greenwich House Gallery in Ohio, Geary Gallery in Connecticut, and Saks Galleries in Denver, Colorado. He is also featured in the 2019 “Weather or Not: Art with Atmosphere” exhibition at the I.D.E.A. Museum in Arizona, and has participated in The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art in Brooklyn, New York.  Chin H Shin has a Master of Art Degree from Long Island University. His past affiliations include Oil Painters of America, American Society of Marine Artist, and Portrait Society of America, and has also been Juror of Award for Bold Brush International Art Competition and also current winner of The Bold Brush Award.  Artist Statement “The Basic philosophy of my art is bringing the huge Power or energy from nature or daily life. My abstract does not come from the direct practice of Abstract on canvas, I explore my own abstract without giving up what I see in front of me.” – Chin H Shin Recent Past Exhibitions • 2020 Juror of Award at Boldbrush Art Competition • 2020 The Boldbrush Award at Faso International Competition • 2019 Autumn Art Show at Saks Gallery, Denver, CO • 2019 Weather or Not: IDEA Museum Art Show in Arizona • 2017 The Other Art Fair-Brooklyn, New York • 2016 Group Art Show at Transform Art Gallery, New York • 2014 Solo Art Show, Huntington, NY • 2014 A Judge for Boldbrush Art Competition • 2013 Solo Art Show, Locust Valley...
