Late Summer River Landscape / - Realistic Impression -
By Jan Hillebrand Wijsmüller
Located in Berlin, DE
Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller (1855 Amsterdam - 1925 ibid.), Late Summer River Landscape, oil on canvas, relined, 34 x 56 cm (inside measurement), 43 x 64 cm (frame), signed J[an] H[illebrand] Wijsmuller at lower right.
- in good condition, the frame with isolated bumped spots
- Realistic Impression -
About the artwork
The panoramic landscape format shows a river landscape, with the course of the river, which curves to the right, leading the eye into the depths of the picture and tempting it to continue the landscape in the imagination beyond the visible area. At the same time, however, the fact that the landscape is not visible through the bend in the river focuses our gaze on the entirety of the landscape depicted, without prompting us to focus on distant details. Accordingly, the brushstroke is not designed to render details with realistic precision. In the front left area of the river there is even a completely free brushwork, trained by Impressionism, which nevertheless remains committed to representational and convincingly suggests the movement of the water.
Regardless of the distance of the observer, the entire picture is painted with the same broad brushstroke, so that the landscape is given as an impression. And yet this impression is not ephemeral, as in the case of French Impressionism, to put it exaggeratedly, but reveals to us the essence of the landscape in all its richness. This is why the Dutch variant of Impressionism is always also a realism, although the pictures appear less progressive, but still contain a dimension of landscape painting that is lost with progress.
In the impression, the reality of the landscape is revealed, and this happens as we experience the landscape in the visual impression. Wijsmuller does not depict houses or people in order to allow the experience of the landscape to fully unfold. The experience is determined first and foremost by the river, which does not flow into the picture from our point of view, but towards us. Where the river begins to bend, the water is churned by a rapids. Toward us, the riverbed widens and the water comes to rest, covering the entire width of the foreground like a mirror.
The stillness of the water corresponds to the evening mood of the late summer landscape, in which the warm tones of the evening light blend with the yellow and brown tones of the plants. A gentle, almost idyllic reality, carried by the brushstroke, yet animated by a liveliness that is also made visible by the brushstroke. The broad, dynamically placed brushstrokes evoke the movement of the treetops and animate even the immobile reeds, while the trunks on the right bank, executed in virtuoso white strokes that seem like markings, make the sunlight shine. On the other bank, a carpet of light also spreads out, its energetic effect again expressed in the brushstroke. The dynamic of the landscape is further enhanced by the complementary color contrasts between the greens, yellows, and browns on the one hand and the blue of the all-encompassing sky on the other. A contrast that is intensified by the reflection in the water.
The evening coming to rest of the landscape is thus at the same time an all-encompassing contrasting and yet in itself harmonious movement. This reality becomes accessible to us as an experience in the impression of the landscape.
About the artist
Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller entered the Royal Academy of Arts in Amsterdam in 1876 and studied under the innovative Professor August Allebé, who was famous for the Amsterdam Impressionism, also known as the Allebé School.
In 1877, Wijsmuller transferred to the Hague Academy of Art, and thus to the Hague School, and then completed his studies at the Brussels Academy of Art. Returning to the Netherlands, Wijsmuller opened his own studio in Amsterdam.
In 1883 he won the prestigious Young Artist Award, donated by Willink van Collen, which made Wijsmuller a well-known and sought-after artist.
Wijsmuller was a member of the Societät Arti et Amicitiae Amsterdam and the Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
Wijsmuller belongs to the second generation of the Hague School. While Vincent van Gogh described the protagonists of the first generation to his brother Theo as "the great gray people," the second generation, and Wijsmuller in particular, used a much more colorful palette. His oeuvre makes him a major player in Dutch Impressionism...

Coastal landscape with the beach of Scheveningen
Oil on panel
62 x 80 cm. - Framed 84 x 102 cm.
Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 19th Century European Paintings, Watercolours 12.03.1989, lot 11 (see details in photos)
The fine coastal view presented here is a work signed and dated by the Dutch landscape painter Hubertus van Hove (The Hague, 1814 - Antwerp, 1865), son of Bartholomeus van Hove (1790-1880). The work exhibits excellent taste and quality of execution, displaying a tender feeling for nature, romantic in character, and a mastery of drawing and a delicacy of chiaroscuro and harmony that is truly astonishing.
Although his major production was concentrated in works depicting domestic scenes, he was also an excellent landscape painter, a master in the use of light that he was able to infuse into his works through quick and precise brushstrokes, creating lively compositions such as the one in the catalogue.
Here we see a glimpse of one of the most fascinating beaches in the Netherlands, just a few kilometres from the city of The Hague, overlooking the North Sea. As early as the 17th century, this area became a popular seaside resort for entertainment, strolling and fish-buying among the citizens of nearby The Hague.
We are on a bright day on a wide sandy beach populated by numerous people who have come to breathe in the fresh sea air and are engaged in various activities. In the foreground we see a well-dressed couple on horseback, probably on a trip to the seaside, accompanied by a servant and a horseman, observing the catch lying on the beach by a fishing family. Behind them a carriage has stopped, the wealthy passenger chats with another middle-class couple, while a servant protects them from the sun with an umbrella.
The space is mainly occupied by the sky, criss-crossed by a few clouds and lit by a pale sun; typical is the clear, gentle light that gives a great sense of tranquillity to the composition.
The Dutch were the first to think of the sea in a ''modern'' sense, as a place of recreation, and already in the 17th century the beach of Scheveningen, famous because it was also the subject of paintings by Vincent van Gogh, was a place of pastime and outdoor activity.
Many Flemish authors, first and foremost Adriaen van de Velde...

In 1859, he moved to San Francisco where he worked for an engraver and later set up his own engraving business. Studying with Samuel Marsden Brookes in 1863, he was determined to become a painter. He married artist Elizabeth Emerson and did watercolor painting with her guidance. Image size: 21.5 inches x 37.5 inches

A busy quayside painting by William Edward Webb of Douglas Harbour on the Isle of man. Fishermen in boats can be seen preparing to head ashore as other figures make their way along the quayside.
William Edward Webb was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1862 to William Benjamin Webb and Ellen Butler. His father was a printer and an artist and it is highly likely he received tuition from him. Following the death of his mother, his father remarried and moved the family to Manchester sometime after 1871.
By the 1880’s, Webb had started working as an artist and later set up a studio at 30 Exchange Buildings in Manchester. He began exhibiting at the Manchester City Art Gallery from 1890, where he showed more than 60 paintings during his lifetime. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery Liverpool from 1892. He married Clara Foster in 1899 and the couple lived at 1 Sylvan Grove, Chorlton Upon Medlock in South Manchester with their daughter Florrie. He became friends with the artist Walter Emsley (1860-1938) who also lived in Manchester.
Although he spent the rest of his life in Manchester, Webb travelled throughout the UK painting coastal and marine scenes around the main ports and harbours. He spent a great deal of time in the Isle of Mann painting numerous scenes along the coast including views of Peel and Douglas Harbour, subjects he frequently returned to. Webb painted in a highly distinctive style; loose and informal but which manages to retain the sense of perspective. He struggled with ill health and depression throughout his life which sadly led to his suicide 9 November, 1903. In 1974, a retrospective exhibition was held at The Old Customs House and Old Solent House in Lymington, which brought a new found interest in his work.
His paintings are now highly sought after and are represented in many collections and Museums including the Astley Hall...

Oil on canvas : Cattle near the cliffs of Herne Bay KENT by Thomas Syndey Cooper
Located in Gent, VOV
Thomas Sidney Cooper was one of the foremost animal painters of the Victorian period. He was born in Canterbury, Kent, and as a small child he began to show strong artistic inclinations, but the circumstances of his family did not allow him to receive any systematic training. By the time he was twelve years old, he was working in the shop of a coach painter. Later he obtained a job as a scene painter, and he alternated between these two occupations for about eight years. He still felt a strong desire to become an artist, and all his spare moments were spent drawing and painting from nature. At the age of twenty, he went to London, drew for a while in the British Museum, and was admitted as a student of the Royal Academy. Subsequently, he returned to Canterbury, where he was able to earn a living as a drawing master and by the sale of sketches and drawings.
In 1827, he settled in Brussels and married before taking up a position as a teacher in Brussels in 1829. There he befriended Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven, the great Belgian animal painter, who greatly influenced his style. He was also influenced by the 17th Century Dutch School. Because of the Belgian Revolution, he returned to London where he settled and first exhibited at Suffolk Street in 1833. He exhibited forty-eight pictures at the British Institution between 1833 and 1863. ‘Landscape and Cattle’, Royal Academy 1833, was shown until 1902 without a break - a record for a continuous exhibit at the Royal Academy. Sheep and cattle were his most frequent subjects, although he did paint a few figurative subjects. Cooper collaborated between 1847 and 1870 with Frederick Richard Lee...

Biography: Volcker Hans was born on October 12, 1865 in Pyrzyce, Poland. Hans was the son of a pastor, orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandfather.
Hans Volcker was a painter of landscapes, seascapes, still lives and portraits. He also painted in watercolour and fresco techniques.
In 1885, Volcker was a student of famed Norwegian realist painter Hans Fredrik Gude (1825 – 1903) at the Berlin Academy. His teacher encouraged him to travel to Scandinavia. During his study trips, he made landscape paintings of Scandinavian mountain and lakes, that brought him later great recognition.
In 1891, he led his own plein air painting school. The most famous pupils were german sculptor and painter Margarethe Haeffner (1884 – 1977) and the painter Oskar Moll (1875 – 1947).
With his Berlin friend painter Walter Leistikow (1865 – 1908), who was also a pupil of Gude, he shared an admiration for Max Liebermann (1847 – 1935). His acquaintance with Liebermann’s paintings furthered his stylistic development to an Impressionism.
In 1894 he lived in Munich and moved to Wiesbaden in 1899, where he was active as a contemporary artist and as a member of the Art Societies, presenting Max Liebermann, Fritz Overbeck or Lovis Corinth, among others.
Today, particular importance is attached to the “Dutch Secession” exhibition, featuring paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Jan Toorop. In 1912, the society showed paintings by Alexei Jawlensky...

Shipping in the Pool of London at Dusk with Tower Bridge in the Distance
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 19.5 inches x 29.5 inches
Size including frame: 26.75 inches x 36.75 inches
An atmospheric painting of ships in the Pool of London at dusk by Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher. A variety of boats are depicted in the scene, including tug boats and barges. In the distance lies the iconic Tower Bridge. The Pool of London is a stretch of the River Thames between Tower Bridge and Limehouse and is divided into two sections, the Upper Pool and the Lower Pool.
Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher was a marine artist who was born in Marylebone, London on 23 July 1857 to Robert Henry Fletcher and Julia Pennell. His father worked for the Bengal Pilot Service guiding shipping along the Hooghly River between Calcutta and the Bay of Bengal. After the death of his father in 1862, his mother married the picture dealer Reuben Brooks. He attended the Bradmore House School in Chiswick Lane before enrolling at the Chelsea School of Art, where he became a close friend of the landscape artist Daniel Sherrin.
Fletcher initially enlisted in the Army Hospital Corp, serving in Nova Scotia but was invalided out in 1882 at the age of 24 due to an eye condition. His records indicate he was 6ft tall with fair hair and grey eyes. He continued to paint in his spare time and undoubtedly his travels would have inspired his subject matter and given him a deeper knowledge of shipping and the sea. He married Annie Reed Moses in 1886 at Norwich and they lived in Margate before moving back to London to live in Blackheath around 1890. He is widely believed to have set up an auction business during this time to help support his growing family, however , perhaps due to the return of ill health he decided to give it up to focus on painting.
Although he did not exhibit, he sold his work mainly through art galleries, possibly aided by his step father. He also used the pseudonym of John Hayes which was probably for contractual reasons. By 1901, he had established himself as a full time artist and was living at Georgette Place in Greenwich with his wife and their 5 children. He later moved to 99 Lee Road, Blackheath where he spent the rest of his life. He died at Blackheath on 23 June, 1945.
Much of Fletcher’s work consisted of views of the river Thames or ships in harbours...
