Beach See Water Hubertus Van Hove Signed Paint Oil on table 19th Century Flemish

1839

About the Item

Hubertus van Hove (The Hague, 1814 - Antwerp, 1865) - Signed H Van Hove and dated 1839 (bottom left) - Coastal landscape with the beach of Scheveningen Oil on panel 62 x 80 cm. - Framed 84 x 102 cm. Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 19th Century European Paintings, Watercolours 12.03.1989, lot 11 (see details in photos) The fine coastal view presented here is a work signed and dated by the Dutch landscape painter Hubertus van Hove (The Hague, 1814 - Antwerp, 1865), son of Bartholomeus van Hove (1790-1880). The work exhibits excellent taste and quality of execution, displaying a tender feeling for nature, romantic in character, and a mastery of drawing and a delicacy of chiaroscuro and harmony that is truly astonishing. Although his major production was concentrated in works depicting domestic scenes, he was also an excellent landscape painter, a master in the use of light that he was able to infuse into his works through quick and precise brushstrokes, creating lively compositions such as the one in the catalogue. Here we see a glimpse of one of the most fascinating beaches in the Netherlands, just a few kilometres from the city of The Hague, overlooking the North Sea. As early as the 17th century, this area became a popular seaside resort for entertainment, strolling and fish-buying among the citizens of nearby The Hague. We are on a bright day on a wide sandy beach populated by numerous people who have come to breathe in the fresh sea air and are engaged in various activities. In the foreground we see a well-dressed couple on horseback, probably on a trip to the seaside, accompanied by a servant and a horseman, observing the catch lying on the beach by a fishing family. Behind them a carriage has stopped, the wealthy passenger chats with another middle-class couple, while a servant protects them from the sun with an umbrella. The space is mainly occupied by the sky, criss-crossed by a few clouds and lit by a pale sun; typical is the clear, gentle light that gives a great sense of tranquillity to the composition. The Dutch were the first to think of the sea in a ''modern'' sense, as a place of recreation, and already in the 17th century the beach of Scheveningen, famous because it was also the subject of paintings by Vincent van Gogh, was a place of pastime and outdoor activity. Many Flemish authors, first and foremost Adriaen van de Velde , used to depict this very beach, teeming with middle-class people who liked to enjoy their leisure time, as well as the fishermen who populated the area all year round. Among the most famous works are 'The Beach at Scheveningen' (Staatliche Museen, Kassel) or 'Carriage on the Beach at Scheveningen' (The Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace) [1] both by Adriaen van de Velde, very similar to the painting we propose here, and from which our author must necessarily have taken inspiration. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is completed by a nice gilded frame and is sold with a certificate of authenticity and guarantee. We take care of and organise the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. It is also possible to see the painting in the gallery in Riva del Garda, we will be happy to welcome you to show you our collection of works.

  • Garden Landscape Monticelli Signed Paint Oil on table 19th Century France
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Antichità Castelbarco SRLS is proud to present: Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli (Marseille 1824 - ivi 1886) signed Animated Scene in a Garden Oil on panel 30 x 46 cm - Frame 45.5 x 63 cm An artist from an Italian family, Milanese in particular, Adolphe Monticelli was born in 1824 in Marseille, where he attended the local academy, before deciding to move to Paris to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, becoming a pupil of Paul Delaroche. When he met Narcisse Diaz, a member of the Barbizon school, in 1855, he joined this group of painters who loved to leave their painting studios to paint outdoors, in front of the natural model, which allowed him to find sincere inspiration, along the lines that, a few years later, would lead to the Impressionist phenomenon. The author of fantastic themes and gallant scenes lit by vibrant touches of light, Monticelli developed a true predilection for ladies and knights, linked in places of rocaille derivation and dominated by a profound elegance, such as the one under consideration. Contrary to academic precepts, he painted with daring brushstrokes, rebelling against the usual smooth precision, he loved to play with colour, using it in various gradations within a single painting, using these techniques to create romantic scenes and landscapes of parks and gardens bathed in light, without preparatory drawing, with a personal and lively manner of dense and sketchy brushstrokes, inspired by certain sketches by Eugène Delacroix Monticelli had often adopted Diaz's practice of introducing imagined nudes or elegantly dressed figures into his landscapes, with a singular alienating effect. Belonging to the generation immediately preceding the Impressionists, he was greatly admired by Van Gogh, to the point of becoming one of his reference points. After 1870, Monticelli returned to Marseille, where he would live in poverty, despite a vast and interesting production. A move that cost the painter a great deal, as it would only take him a few years, still in Paris, to catch on to the new Impressionist market...

He came into contact with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi during a trip to Capri, Sorrento and Naples in 1866. In Rome, he kept company with Mariano Fortuny, whose painting, with its pleasant, captivating luministic effects, made a very strong impression on Joris. That was how he developed his own very personal artistic language, which went on to bring him remarkable commercial success on an international scale, helped by his collaboration with Paris art dealer...
