Post-Impressionist Landscape Paintings

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

Eur 04
Located in Roma, RM
About the painting: Small glimpse of an abstract post-impressionist style landscape of EUR '42, a district built in Rome in 1940, with large white marble facades struck by the light and shadows of the foliage of the city's pines. The artist's focus is on architecture and its shadows, the contrast between solids and voids, between darkness and light. A wonderful contrast that takes the person back to Italy, to one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of the capital. Created in 2012, the painting aims to revive the tranquility of Italian landscapes, all on a 50 x 150 canvas. About the artist: Laura Federici is an artist and architect based in Rome, Italy. She has a number of solo: Galleria Andrè (Roma 2011; 2012; 2016; 2019; 2020; 2023); Gallerie Brieve (Parigi, 2014); Galleria l’Affiche (Milano 2008; 2011); Galleria Il Segno (Roma, 2007); Galleria Beit Ahmad (Aleppo, Siria, 2003; 2005). Plage a Belle Ile - Post Impressionist Landscape Oil by Georges D'Espagnat
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed post impressionist landscape oil on panel by popular French painter Georges D'Espagnat. The piece depicts the beach at Belle Ile, an island off the coast of Brittany in France, at sunset. An exceptional early painting by D'Espagnat which shows the precursor influence of Fauvism which was to dominate his paintings in the following few years. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 23"x26" Unframed: 15"x18" Provenance: Private French collection A certificate of authenticity from Mr. Jean-Dominique Jacquemond is available upon request. This work will be included in the catalogue raisonne of Georges D'Espagnat under preparation by Mr. Jacquemond From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France. In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948). D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style. D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). He also exhibited at the first Salon de la Société de la Gravure sur Bois. Among other exhibitions were 1912, A Century of French Art ( Centenaire de l'art français), St Petersburg; 1916, Kunstverein, Winterthur; 1918, 1926, Galerie M. Bertheim, Paris; 1930, Contemporary French Art...

Tonnelle Nord-Ouest Au Parc De Marquayrol (La Pergola) By Henri Martin
Located in New Orleans, LA
Henri Martin French | 1860-1943 Tonnelle nord-ouest au Parc de Marquayrol (La Pergola) Signed “Henri Martin” (lower right) Oil on canvas A dazzling display of color and texture, Henri Martin's Tonnelle nord-ouest au Parc de Marquayrol (La Pergola) celebrates the natural beauty of the artist’s sprawling 17th-century estate perched upon a hill overlooking the village of Labastine-du-Vert. The famed Post-Impressionist painter created many impressive works during his illustrious career, but the paintings of his beloved garden at Maquayrol remain among the most cherished by museums and collectors, and this example is among the finest of these compositions. An Italianate garden lied at the heart of Marquayrol, complete with cypress-lined paths and a circular pool adorned with geraniums. Painted in 1925, Tonnelle nord-ouest au Parc de Marquayrol (La Pergola) takes the viewer behind the walls of Martin’s garden, revealing its pièce de résistance: a stately yet romantic pergola strewn with flowering foliage. A towel lies beneath the luxuriant umbrella of blooms and Martin paints a still-life tableau of a water pitcher, glass and bowl of fruit amidst the dense thickets of plants, juxtaposing peaceful accoutrements of domestic life with the powerful beauty of untamed nature. Even so, elements of the garden remain elegantly manicured. A warm sill along the top of the bench provides space for a myriad of potted plants to flower in the sunlight. Even the central pergola itself, which so reverently showcases the sheer strength of nature with its profusion of blooms, still carries the touch of the gardener who trains each branch and leaf to fall in the most graceful and beautiful way. Henri Martin began his artistic studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. In 1879, he moved to Paris to study under Jean Paul Laurens, and his early academic style earned him a medal from the conservative Paris Salon at the age of 23. Shortly after, Martin was awarded a trip to Italy, which profoundly affected his artistic development. While studying the works of the Italian masters Giotto and Masaccio, Martin acquired a new perspective on light, leading him to abandon his classical training and fall under the influence of the not-so-academic Impressionists. Utilizing and experimenting with various impressionistic techniques, Martin created important and well-received Divisionist, Symbolist and Pointillist paintings. His work was so admired that it earned him the Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. Martin remained an independent artist, refusing numerous contracts from successful Paris dealers...

A Winter Landscape by Swedish Artist Rikard Lindström
Located in Stockholm, SE
Depicting a winter wonderland, this piece mesmerizes the viewer with its turquoise sky - a bold and unique choice that draws the eyes upwards. But the narrative is more profound. Set against this sky is a distant, rugged stone hill, standing as a testament to the timeless beauty of nature. A few trees benethe the hill, gracefully blanketed with snow. The snow itself is no ordinary white, but a mix of pink and blue shimmers, giving the piece a more interesting quality. More intriguing are the tracks left in the snow. Whose might they be? An animal, perhaps? Or did the artist himself tread this frozen landscape, leaving behind a subtle signature? Such is the mystery of Lindström's work. Rikard Magnus Lindström (1882-1943) was not just a painter but a storyteller, deeply rooted in his Swedish heritage. He's best known for his paintings of archipelago scenes, where the tranquil and tempestuous moods of the sea often play central characters. Born in Stockholm, Lindström's journey into the art world began at the Konstakademien in Stockholm, and his passion took him to Copenhagen and Paris. Throughout his life, Lindström's restless spirit saw him wander, capturing the diverse landscapes of Stockholm's archipelago, Västkusten, Åland, and notably, Lofoten. His affinity for portraying the vast expanse of the sea, often with sailing vessels in the backdrop, is legendary. Lindström's colors were described as "powerful yet harmonious," and this piece is no exception. The juxtaposition of the turquoise sky with the shimmering snow showcases his masterful play with colors. A member of the younger generation of the Konstnärsförbundet, Lindström was greatly influenced by the older members, particularly by Karl Nordström's national-romantic paintings. Besides painting, Lindström had a flair for writing and was a popular contributor to Dagens Nyheter, often penning articles and notes in Morgonbris. However, beneath the vivacious, nature-loving exterior was a man of depth and complexity, as his ex-wife, Martha Rydell-Lindström, has depicted in her book. He was a lover of life, but his nature held layers of vulnerability and tenderness. Today, this winter landscape stands as a tribute not just to Lindström's artistic genius but to the very essence of the man himself. Embrace the opportunity to own a piece of Swedish art history, painted by an artist whose legacy continues to inspire. Rikard Lindströms paintings...

Henri-André Martin Road in Eygalieres, Alpilles, Provence, Oil on Canvas, 1999
Located in Saint Amans des cots, FR
Oil on canvas by Henri-André Martin (1918-2004), France, 1999. Road in Eygalieres, Alpilles, Provence. With frame: 52x67 cm - 20.5x26.4 inches. Without frame: 46x61cm - 18.1x24 inches. Format 12P. Signed and dated lower left "Henri-André Martin 99" (see photo). Located on the back (see photo). Can be matched to make a pair with another painting by Henri-André Martin that we offer on 1stdibs whose title is "Henri-André Martin Road in the Alpilles, Provence, Oil on Canvas, 1980s". Born in Lyon in 1918, the child and the adolescent Henri-André Martin spent his youth in Saint-Étienne, his father, Edme Martin, first installed as a practicing doctor in Lyon, having been appointed doctor of the anti-tuberculosis dispensaries of the Loire. During his first years of studying medicine in Lyon, he nevertheless enrolled in the Beaux-Arts. Appointed hospital intern upon his return from captivity in 1942, he ended his medical career as director of the otolaryngology university clinic at Édouard-Herriot hospital. But painting was his passion. Painting was for Henri-André Martin the way of expressing his feelings. By nature very reserved and of an extreme modesty that many took for coldness, it was what allowed him to express his strong artistic sensitivity and, his pictorial periods are as many reflects of his anxieties, of his hopes, of his joys. At every period of his life, wherever he goes and whenever he has a moment, he paints gouaches, often of small size, but sometimes of larger size. He also paints beaches that have been compared to those of Boudin. Their invoice shows, however, that this figure is only appearance and that in fact, these beaches made of water, sky and sand, readily dispense with the motif, the work of the material seeming to have more importance. as the subject. Despite the fact that until the 1970s he painted "on the ground", his canvases remain far removed from the anecdote. Often harsh like the landscapes of Provence, the Parisian walls which express concern, or the railways, the switch tracks which suggest, in ocher and black, all the embarrassment of choice. We find the same nostalgic gravity in the canvases of the carcasses of boats which, as his friend Louis Pons later wrote, "seem to die of immobility" or in the canvases of Venice, or the landscapes of Eygalières. In the following years, his painting became simpler, more synthetic, such as these landscapes with tortured almond trees, black and gnarled olive trees, plane trees standing out against the ocher sky of the dawn of Provence, in winter. These are also the canvases of Hamburg in the dough becomes heavier, the colors darken, marking all the gravity of the port landscapes. Workshop work gradually takes precedence over motif painting. The pivotal period coincides with that of his work on the olive tree, during which he leads the realization of the "Trunks", a collection of six lithographic plates, of the book L'olivier comprising many lithographs and serigraphs, but also texts. poetic and numerous paintings. He then became passionate about everything related to the olive tree (literature, painting, traditions, history), but also to the tree itself, its thousand-year-old history, its poetry, its symbols, but also its culture, its size. oil production...

"Parisian Street", Cityscape Oil on Canvas by Robert Farrington
Located in Pasadena, CA
This Robert Farrington's painting serves as a visual gateway to a distinct period in post-war France, composed with a deep respect for the elements interwoven into the collective memory of Paris. His work adeptly engages with the archetypal settings and concepts that convey the quintessence of this beloved and frequently visited capital. As the viewer gazes upon this artwork, they are instantly immersed in the ambiance of a food trade street, and especially the familiar historic brasserie “Au Pied de Cochon” - the sole establishment in the painting that still exists nowadays - and its surroundings at the heart of the bustling Halles district. At "6 Rue Coquillère", the act of opening the doors, each adorned with handles that resemble pig's trotters, transports one through a temporal gateway into the quintessential French world of "la cochonnaille"... The renowned "Pied de Cochon" restaurant made its debut in 1947. In its early days, it became the preferred gathering place for the "Forts des Halles" – the diligent laborers who tirelessly transported goods through the pavilions of the old Halles de Paris. From these dedicated workers to the luminaries of the time, this establishment emerged as a symbol of Parisian life. Farrington reconstructs a scene around this restaurant, nourished by her own Parisian experience when he was a young American living in France. An iconic Brigitte Bardot poster...
