This lovely British Victorian landscape oil painting is attributed to noted artist Sam Bough. It was painted circa 1855 after Bough had moved to Hamilton Lanarkshire in Scotland to focus on painting landscapes along side fellow artist Alexander Frazer. The composition is several cattle watering in a stream under the boughs of an ancient tree. There is superb impasto, for example on the clouds and this is a charming 19th century oil painting.
Provenance. London estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 29 inches by 16 inches unframed and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt Victorian frame, 36 inches by 23 inches framed and in good condition.
Samuel Bough RSA (1822–1878) was an English-born landscape painter who spent much of his career working in Scotland. He was born the third of five children in Abbey Street, Carlisle in northern England, the son of James Bough (1794-1845), a shoemaker, and Lucy Walker, a cook. He was raised in relative poverty, but with a keen encouragement in the arts. He was self-taught but mixed with local artists such as Richard Harrington and George Sheffield, and was strongly influenced by the work of Turner. After an unsuccessful attempt to live as an artist in Carlisle he obtained a job and as a theatre scenery painter in Manchester in 1845, later also working in Glasgow in the same role. Encouraged by Daniel Macnee to take up landscape painting he moved to Hamilton from 1851-4 and worked there with Alexander Fraser. In 1854 he moved to Port Glasgow to work on his technique of painting ships and harbours. His paintings were noted for their sensitivity to atmosphere and light, were often of cloudy shorelines and busy harbours. He also began supplementing his income by illustrating books, before moving to Edinburgh in 1855. On coming to Edinburgh he lived in a terraced house at 5 Malta Terrace in the Stockbridge area of the city. Following Turner's example, he became a skilful painter of seaports. Thomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century.
Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own.
The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore.
The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...

A fine & large antique maritime oil painting of the war ship HMS Britannia, by Robert Strickland Thomas (1787-1853), the painting circa 1835.
The painting depicts HMS Britannia broadside with several other war ships of the British fleet, most likely returning from the Mediterranean.
In the foreground are several small boats with sailors variously occupied attending to them. A yacht with a crowded deck is visible on the left. In the center foreground there is a barrel or possibly a buoy in the water, a device commonly employed in some of Thomas's paintings.
To the verso is an old auction label from the 1920s and another partial label, there are also some annotations on the stretcher with details of photographic images of the painting.
There is also an old label of ownership "Mrs. Strange 6 Elvaston Place", this address was a large Georgian house in the prestigious London borough of South Kensington.

Note: According to Cooper, it was during a visit to Lee in Devon that a mutual decision was made to '...paint some pictures conjointly'. Lee was to paint the landscape first and Cooper to introduce the animals - and, at Lee's insistence, to handle the financial arrangements. In the late 1840s both artists were at the height of their popularity and their exhibited collaborations in the Dutch tradition created a 'great sensation' at the Royal Academy when they first appeared.

Louis-Auguste Second, known under the name of Fereol, had an interesting multifaceted artistic career. He was born in an acting environment: himself the son of an actor, he was the cousin of Marie Dorval (the famous romantic actress who was Alfred de Vigny's mistress) and the nephew of Mademoiselle Mars.
After having done the military school of Saint-Cyr, he became a second lieutenant in the young imperial guard and took part in the campaign of France in 1814. But he quickly reconverted in the spectacle and becomes in 1817 lyric singer (tenor) at the Opéra-Comique where he officiated until 1838, before exercising his talents at the Théâtre de la Renaissance. He is also a playwright (for example he wrote "Five Years of Intermission" in 1833). A fairly famous figure at the time, his miniature portrait by Paul Gomien was exhibited at the Salon of 1835.
Painting is another of his activities, and not the least.
A pupil of Xavier Leprince, he exhibited at the Salon in 1824, and this very regularly until 1848. In 1834, he exhibited no less than 7 paintings! These are essentially landscapes, of a fairly classic style, representing views of the North (Douai, Boulogne, etc.), Picardy (Amiens), Paris and its surroundings, Fontainebleau, and above all of Sologne and Orleans, city where he attended high school. At the Salon, he was domiciled in Paris at various addresses in the Batignolles district until 1835, then in Orleans from 1837.
Widower in 1832 of his cousin Eugénie Boutet de Monvel whom he had married in 1822, he retired to his property of "L'ormette" in Saint-Denis en Val in the Loiret, before settling definitively in Orléans itself. in 1846. He leads a fairly active social life there (he had already founded the Musical Institute there, for example). His son Félix was born there in 1825, where he was a lawyer before embarking on a career as a doctor.
A staunch Bonapartist, holder of the Saint Helena medal, he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1862. His exaggerated patriotism manifested itself one last time when he committed suicide on September 5, 1870 after learning of the surrender of Sedan. He is the great-grandfather of the brothers Jacques and Pierre Brissaud, the famous painters and illustrators.
