This interesting work shows us one of the most sought-after iconographic subjects in the Christian tradition, presented here according to an ancient and proven scheme. We see the Virgin, majestic, in the centre of the scene while holding a chubby child, who is offering a small bird to the young St John (tradition has it that it is a goldfinch, one of the symbols of the passion of Christ) to be caressed.
Completing the Holy Family, we can see Saint Joseph in the shadows, apart from the loving everyday scene depicted in the foreground, calmly leaning on his walking stick.
Regarding the stylistic characteristics of this small panel, it is easy to recognise the influence of 16th and 17th century Emilian painting, which leads us to confirm its traditional attribution to Ippolito Scarsella (circa 1550 - 1620) from Ferrara, undoubtedly one of the most important artists of this pictorial context. A very rare and collectible oil on canvas triptych painting depicting portraits of "The Three Bs of Classical Music": Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms - Housed in a fine carved and painted frame in gold gilt and green paint by Frederick Harer, with musical scores underneath each portrait. The paintings appear to be unsigned. The frame is signed on the back "F. W. Harer" and dated 1918.

Susan Crawford was born in Scotland in 1941 and was brought up on a farm in East Lothian where her parents bred and trained racehorses. She was educated at St Denis School, Edinburgh and at Priorsfield, Godalming, before studying classical drawing for two years at Studio Simi in Florence. In 1967 she went to Ireland for a few days and stayed for almost two years, thereby kicking off her professional career as an equestrian artist.
On returning to London she bought a studio and started getting private commissions to paint a number of famous racehorses and several royal portraits. She has to date painted 22 Derby winners. Her first joint exhibition was with the Tryon Gallery in 1969, where she sold all her pictures on the opening night.
Over the next 40 years she travelled widely; firstly to the USA then Canada, Germany, Brunei, Australia and the Sultanate of Oman as well as with numerous visits to Ireland and throughout the UK.

The toy soldier, perched delicately on a green leaf-arm, acts as a miniature symbol of violence embedded in play, questioning the narratives we inherit and enact. The piece was originally commissioned for Imaxinaria, Mostra Internacional de Ilustración Contemporánea in Galicia (Spain) and remains one of the most iconic works of the series.
