Elena Burykina
"Halfway, " Oil painting

2020

About the Item

Elena Burykina's "Halfway" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a woman with her hands folded and supporting her chin as she stares forward, her face cast in light and obscured in shadow from a nearby window. Artist Statement: My name is Olena Burykina. I was born in Ulan-Ude, a city in the Russian Far East, in 1977. In 1985, my family moved west to Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. It was there that I received my first classical art education. For eleven years of primary and secondary schooling and during 4 years of art school for children, I was taught drawing, painting, sculpture, and art history. In 1994, I used this education to transition into the field of architecture, where I continued my training in drawing and painting. I completed a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and a Master’s degree in city planning, and I began a career as an architect. After working for more than a decade as an architect, I returned my full attention to art in 2011. I began teaching children in a private art school in Dnepropetrovsk. This small step eventually led me to leave my architectural consulting in Ukraine and Russia to focus again on painting. In 2013, I moved to the United States and began working full time as an artist. In 2016, I started work with linoleum block prints, and I have started a collection of flowers and bridges. With this series I won an Emerging Artist Scholarship at the 2017 4 Bridges Art Festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2018, I participated in a group exhibition Women Painting Women at Customs House Museum & Cultural Center in Clarksville, Tennessee. Featuring artists are Linda Brandon, Elena Burykina, Alia El-Bermani, Gaela Erwin, Ann Piper, Tonja Sell, Pamela Wilson. I continue my education as an artist by attending workshops in a private local atelier. My favorite subjects are people with their personalities, moods, thoughts, and favorite things. I work with different mediums such as oil and watercolor paints, etching and linoleum block printing.
