Antonio Canova is a beautiful black and white etching on paper, realized between 1770-1810 by the Italian old master, Giovanni Elia Morghen (1721-1789), after a painting by Pellegrini, as the inscriptions on plate report.
Title on plate on the lower margin at the center.
This original print represents Antonio Canova the Italian sculptor and painter, the greatest exponent of Neoclassicism in sculpture and for this reason called "the new Phidias", in the official portrait reserved to the great personalities. Realized with full mastery of the technique, this old master's print is in excellent condition, as good as new.

Giovanni Elia Morghen (Florence, 1721)
Giovanni Elia Morghen came from a family of engravers in Florence. According to the testimony of Raphael, the most illustrious member of the family, his grandfather was originally from Montpellier and, after marrying a Genoese woman, he moved to Florence, where he opened a lace shop. Both their sons, Giovanni Elia and Filippo, specialized in chalcographic art: Giovanni was predominantly a draftsman, whilst Filippo mastered the art of carving.
In Florence, Giovanni Elia Morghen was a pupil of Giovan Domenico Ferretti, and he probably also worked at the workshop of Carlo Bartolomeo Gregori. Indeed, he, with the other artists of the school, made 26 of the engravings present in the second Florentine edition (1766) of the Salon paintings at the palace of Florence. He then moved to Naples with his brother. From 1756, he began participating in the creation of the tables of the Antiquities of Herculaneum, a work of several volumes published in Naples with various interruptions in the late nineteenth century. Magnificent lithograph depicting the portrait of the great Italian author and playwright Vittorio Alfieri. The figure is in pose and express a great magniloquence and monumentality.
This work has been realized by the French artist and engraver Henri Grévedon (Paris, 1776 - Paris, 1860). Grévedon studied painting in the Parisian workshop of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, professor of painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Henri Grévedon exhibited from 1798 to 1806 and received a second medal in 1790. He was a first class gold medal in 1805 and won the first prize of the torso in 1806. He competed without success for the Prix de Rome in 1805 and 1806. According to Henri Beraldi, he "traveled the world, going to seek success in Russia in 1806 where he became an associate of the Academy of Saint Petersburg. He stayed in Stockholm in 1812, then in London, finally retured to Paris in 1816. Soon he devoted himself completely to lithography, and found there a reputation which would not have come to him with painting". He executed many painted portraits, paintings and miniatures, then he drew directly on the lithographic stone, working in particular for the workshop of Charles Motte during the 1820s. At the Salon of 1824, he won for the second time a gold medal for first class. This original print is numbered on plate in Roman numerals on the higher margin: “Tom II. / Tav. XXII" and is a plate from the series "Illustrazioni de' Monumenti scelti Borghesiani già esistenti nella Villa sul Pincio (..) date ora per la prima volta in luce dal cav. Gio. Gherardo De Rossi e da Stefano Piale sotto la guida di Vincenzo Feoli", by Ennio Quirino Visconti, published by Stamperia de Romanis in Rome in 1821.
This old master’s original print shows a beautiful piece of the Borghese's collection: a marble bust of Geta in a neoclassical style. Geta (full name Publius Septimius Geta) was the son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, and the brother of Caracalla. He was a Roman co-emperor from 209 to 212 AD, first with his father and then with his brother. His biography is very interesting: he was the younger son of Septimius Severus and his second wife; his face was obliterated because of the damnatio memoriae ordered by his brother Caracalla, who had him assassinated.
In excellent conditions, with some light signs of time, some sporadic minor stains along the lower margin, and a usual and imperceptible yellowing of the paper on the margins. This wonderful etching has preserved its charming and fresh impression.
