BESLER. A Group of Four Peonies.
Located in London, GB
Four magnificent copper engraved plates with hand-colour from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. [Nuremberg and Eichstatt, 1640]. The Hortus Eystettensis is a pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was begun by Joachim Camerarius in 1596 and, after his death in 1598, completed by Basil Besler...

Sneezewort, Poppy, Strawflower: 17th C. Besler Hand-colored Botanical Engraving
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a hand-colored copper plate engraving entitled "Ptarmica Vulgaris (Sneezewort), Papaver Spinosum (Mexican Poppy), Chrysocame Peregrina (Seaside Strawflower)", depicting flowering Sneezewort, Mexican Poppy and Seaside Strawberry plants respectively from Basilius Besler's landmark work, Hortus Eystettensis (Garden at Eichstatt), first published in 1613 in Eichstatt, Germany near Nuremberg and later in 1640 and 1713. This beautiful colorful engraving is printed on thin laid chain-linked paper. The left margin is thinner than the others and the left edge is somewhat irregular where the engraving was previously bound in the original publication. The print is otherwise in excellent condition with striking hand-coloring. The sheet measures 20" high and 16.38" wide. Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was an apothecary and botanist. He was curator of the Willibaldsburg Castle garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, prince bishop...

Pink Poppy
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Mark Adams (American, 1925-2006) Title: Pink Poppy Year: 1980 Medium: Color aquatint Paper: Wove Image size: 11.25 x 8.5 inches Sheet size: 18 x 13.5 inches Framed size: 20.25 x 15.75 inches Signature: Signed and dated (1980) in pencil lower right Edition: 50 This one 21/50 Condition: Very good Frame: Framed in dark wood frame with Plexiglas This beautiful aquatint is by the noted San Francisco Bay Area artist Mark Adams (1925-2006). The print is in excellent condition. It is framed, floating in a simple dark wood frame with Plexiglas. The frame is in good condition and goes very well with the print. About the artist: Mark Adams attended Syracuse University and left to study art in New York with Abstract Expressionist Hans Hoffman. He was also a tapestry and stained-glass designer. He designed the windows for Temple Emanu-El, San Francisco’s largest synagogue, as well as has textiles featured in the de Young Museum and San Francisco International Airport. Later in life, Adams transitioned to watercolors, employing everyday objects–such as a flag, a bowl of fruit, and ballet shoes–as his subjects and creating pristine and almost hyper-real images. Through Adams’s vivid, delicate, and translucent colors, these mundane items take on deeper meanings. The artist was married to Beth Van Hoesen, who has portrayed him in an interior scene surrounded by objects he might have also portrayed. H.O. Miethke Das Werk folio "Sunflower" collotype print
Located in Palm Beach, FL
Sunflower, no. 10 from the third installment of Das Werk Gustav Klimts Created during his residency in Litzlberg on Attersee, where Klimt and the Floge family summered from 1900-1907, Klimt explores nature’s transcendental qualities. His single sunflower is human-like, it’s golden halo is like a ring of sun-kissed hair surrounding a bald pate. It’s known that at the same time Klimt was creating this image, he was also at work on a photo essay about the Floge sisters’ clothing from their fashion salon. Their fashion house was best known for its “reform dresses” which featured loose-fitting long robes which billowed at the arms and torso. Viewed with this in mind, it is not a hard leap to imagine the lone sunflower as a self-portrait from reverse. Klimt’s balding head crowned in a golden corona forms the apex of a pyramidal flowing gown of foliage and flowers. By orienting the anthropomorphic flower at the garden’s central foreground and adorning it with repetitive motifs of round flowers of varying sizes, Klimt’s sunflower...

PRÉVOST. Print from Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits
Located in London, GB
Original stipple engraving by Charles-Louis Ruotte, printed in colour and finished by hand. [Paris. 1805] Prévost came from a long line of French artists spanning 400 years. Jean-Louis himself first exhibited at the Salon when only fourteen years of age, showing paintings of bouquets, a vase of flowers and other small botanical studies. Immediately he was commissioned by Monsieur Roussel to paint the flowers in the wealthy landowner's garden. The result was a 12-volume work of gouache studies, entitled "Hortus Cellensis", and was at once acquired by the Paris Natural History Library. Prévost's "Collection des Fleurs et Fruits...
