Considered a leading ink painter, Qin Feng represents China’s avant-garde movement. Invited by the German government to curate an exhibition in Germany in order to promote cultural exchange between the two countries, Qin moved to Berlin in the ’90s where he began to fuse Western modernism and the Chinese ink tradition in abstract compositions. Feng uses traditional calligraphic materials but employs his brush with the unrestrained energy of the Abstract Expressionists. Inspired by his upbringing in Xinjiang, a multicultural intersection of the silk roads, Qin has incorporated Chinese, Uighur, Arabic, and Russian language into his work. The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images.
One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...

Antique Japanese Suibokuga Sage Painting by Kano Tokinobu, 17th century. A sumi-e ink on paper painting illustrating an acolyte at a riverbank. The image of the standing Chinese figure with elongated earlobes (a symbol of enlightenment), hair tied back in a kerchief and long beard, holds a large fan in his left hand to his right shoulder. The long robes are windswept with water curls about the figures feet. The painting with 3 vermillion seals of the artist in the lower left corner. Japanese dry mount paper on a wood frame with thin brocade border silver leafed surround and lacquered wood outer frame.
Condition: Paper restoration on center, a quarter of an inch of the left edge of the painting is added, other minor signs of age, wear, stains and repairs overall fine condition.
Age: Painting Edo Period, circa 1670. Mounting circa 1985.

We have this watercolor by Paresh Maity and (listed separately) the Babu Xavier watercolor, but not the Ranjit Kurmi watercolor.
As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label.

This framed advertising poster for Nanyang Brothers Tobacco dates to the 1920-30s and melds the meticulous detail of traditional Chinese painting with the nuanced color and fine resolution of color lithography. Known as yuefenpai, or calendar posters, these advertisements depicted fashionable women and intriguing scenery alongside annual calendars and product placements. Evolved from traditional nianhua paintings (New Year pictures), these advertising posters were strongly influenced by the Art Deco movement in the west and recall the economic boom of early 20th century Shanghai, an international center of business and trade.
In this example, a young woman dressed in fine clothing and jewelry strolls through a traditional courtyard garden, surrounded by stone statues and towering pagodas.
