1969 Graphic Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, Japan

About the Item

Faces (4 Faces), 1969 Tomio Kinoshita (1923-2014), Japan Woodblock print Paper, pigment, sumi ink Image: 27 high by 18.25 inches wide (68.5 by 46.4 cm) Paper size: 28 high by 19 inches wide (71 by 48 cm) Edition: 10/50 This is a rare early print from Tomio Kinoshita, whose creation of woodblock prints spanned the years between 1955-2007. Kinoshita pulled his prints as they were needed, so there is great variation in color within a particular edition, and often editions were never completed. Since this is number 10/50, it's hard to say how many more than ten prints might have been produced. This particular print was featured in a 1995 exhibition at Mie Prefectural Art Museum in Japan and was published in a catalog produced from the show, which will be included with purchase. There is a thin gray paper border around the edges, which Kinoshita applied to a few of his prints, some of which is missing on the lower left edge.

  • 1960 Big Boys, Woodblock Print by Tomio Kinoshita, Japan
    By Tomio Kinoshita
    Located in Point Richmond, CA
Tomio Kinoshita (1923 – 2014) Big Boys, 1960 Woodblock print Image size: 32.75 high by 22 inches wide (83 by 56 cm) Paper size: 35.5 high by 23.75 inches wide (90 by 60.3 cm) Signed: in pencil lower right, Tomio Kinoshita Titled: in pencil at lower left Edition: 30/50 Condition: Very good The woodblock for this large print was carved in 1958, just three years after Kinoshita’s began creating woodblocks. This print was signed and dated in 1960, but not numbered; prints were also pulled from this block in the 1970s, so it must have been one of more popular images. One of his students has written, “As time progressed further, the postwar era saw improvements in nutrition, and children became taller and heavier than in the past, but their lack of physical exercise and severely inferior physical abilities became a social problem; this is ironically depicted in Big Boys.” In 1963, Kinoshita told him that he had just finished pulling a print of this image in response to a request from Unichi Hiratsuka...

  • Junichiro Sekino Signed Japanese Limited Edition Woodblock Print Aquarium
    By Junichiro Sekino
    Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully composed and richly colored, limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Junichiro Sekino. This print, which is titled "Aquarium", is signed and sealed/ stamped in red at the lower right. We believe this was created in 1956 although it could have been made in 1946 (there are some conflicting dates on this image but we assume 1956 is correct) and comes from a limited edition of 50 prints (the exact number of this particular print and date/year is likely listed in pencil below the matt but we have not removed the print from the frame to confirm the exact number/year). The very image is widely considered by many Sekino critics and scholars to be one of Sekino's masterpieces. It is an exquisite and rare/hard-to-find work. Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world. Would be a fantastic addition to any modern Japanese print...
