Shiko 'Shikou' Munakata Signed Japanese Mingei Woodblock Print Hirosaki Castle

A wonderful Mingei woodblock print titled "Hirosaki Castle (sometimes just "Castle")" by famed Japanese master Showa era printmaker/ artist Shiko Munakata (棟方志功 ) who was widely considered to have been the Pablo Picasso of Japan. Munakata was associated with the Sosaku-hanga movement and the mingei (folk art) movement. His awards and recognitions include the "Prize of Excellence" at the Second International Print Exhibition in Lugano, Switzerland in 1952, the first prize at the São Paulo Bienal Exhibition in Brazil in 1955, and the Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale in 1956. In 1959 he spent a year touring and exhibiting in the United States. Upon his return, the Horinji Temple in Kyoto bestowed him with the honorary rank of “Hokkyo”. In 1962, he received the rank of “Hogan” from Nisseki Temple in Toyama prefecture. other awards include the Medal of Honor in 1963 and the Asahi Shimbun Culture Prize in 1965. In 1970, Munakata received the Order of Culture, the highest honor in the arts by the Japanese government.

A contemporary ink painting on paper by Chinese artist Li Jin (1958-) presented in a white shadowbox frame. Entitled in English "Morning Practice in California", this series of work was painted in 2017 when the artist resided in US. The Chinese title inscription is "Blossom Branch" with artist's name signed in both Chinese and English. The painting is considered "Expressionistic-abstract". Using only various shades of ink, the poetic work depicts a large lotus flower with the pistil in the center composed of clusters of mediating arhats, the beings who have gained nirvana through Buddhism practice (known as Luohans in Chinese). There is a strong association of lotus flower and purity in Buddhism. The wisdom one can possibly achieve may be considered omnipresent and morphogenetical quantum and be part of everything around us. The image size is 13.5" x 13.5".
Provenance: Purchased in 2017 from the Ink Studio at West Bund Art and Design Fair, Shanghai, China.
Li Jin (1958-, Tianjin, China) is an ink master who draws from the tradition of Chinese literati ink painting and creates contemporary works celebrating all aspects of everyday life. Having explored color washes for two decades, Li Jin has translated them into a masterful control of tonality-the "five colors of ink"-in a series of monochrome paintings in the expressionistic-abstract "Da Xie Yi" manner. Through the ink medium's inherent sensitivity and ambiguity, they evoke the nuances of human existence and raise profound questions about self-representation and subjectivity. These rare woodblock printed leaves illustrate awesome panoramic Japanese gardens as artistically drawn from some 200 years ago.
Replete with old pavillions, a tall stone pagoda, stepping stone pathways, lanterns, trees, and tea gardens, they have been rescued from a rare original Edo period book of that day and printed in chuban size format. Our prints measure 10.25 inches by 13.75 inches or a double chuban size.
