Fine Antique Tall Korean Medicine Chest Yakchang Provenance
Located in Atlanta, GA
A fine antique Korean medicine or apothecary chest from late Joseon Dynasty (circa 19th century). Known as Yakchang in Korean, this type of chest was used to sort and store herb medicines in its many small drawers. The prototype was originated in China, but this piece is distinctively Korean. The fine piece was made from Paulownia wood, which has an insect-repelling quality. Relatively tall, the Yakchang features a slightly overhanging and upturning pagoda plank top. The upper part has ten rows of smaller drawers, eight per row and eighty total. The lower part is centered with double doors with brass hinges and pull that open to a small storage space, which is surrounded by twelve larger drawers. Each drawer is fitted with yellow brass pulls and with two names of the herbs in gilt Hanja writings. Examination of the construction and patina shows that this is an authentic antique piece that has seen extensive historical use. Provenance: Purchase from Lucky-Chosun Furniture, Seoul, Korea in 1986 and remains in an American collection until now. With an original invoice and also a freight invoice from Korea to Hongkong. There is also an insurance appraised by Sotheby's from 1997. A tall medicine chest with similar configuration from a doctor's home in Yongin Folk Village is illustrated on plate 75 page 61 in the book "Korean Furniture and Culture" by Bokcha, Soon and Youngsoon. To compare with another Medicine Chest, see illustration on page 47 in "Korean Antique Furniture...

Budai Buddha in dark jade
Located in Milano, IT
This exquisite dark jade Budai, also known as the Laughing Buddha, is a cherished symbol of happiness, prosperity, and abundance in Chinese Buddhist iconography. The figure of Budai, often depicted with a joyful smile and a round, protruding belly, is said to represent contentment, generosity, and the joy of life. Historically, Budai is believed to have been based on an eccentric Chinese Zen monk who lived during the 10th century. Over time, his image evolved to become a symbol of prosperity and well-being, beloved in both religious and cultural contexts. Skillfully carved from dark jade, a stone highly valued in Chinese culture for its association with purity, wisdom, and protection, this sculpture brings both spiritual and artistic significance. Jade has held a special place in Chinese history for millennia, considered more precious than gold and revered for its ability to ward off evil and bring balance. The rich green hues of the dark jade in this Budai sculpture enhance the overall sense of calm and serenity that the figure embodies. The craftsmanship in this piece is evident in the intricate carving of Budai's flowing robes and expressive features. His smiling face radiates warmth and positivity, while his posture-relaxed and grounded-symbolizes inner peace and harmony. This dark jade Budai is more than just a decorative item; it is a reminder of the importance of joy, kindness, and generosity in everyday life. Perfect for both spiritual and decorative purposes, this Budai statue...

Contemporary Japanese Chochin Floor Lamp Limited Edition #2 Zen Washi
By Ryosuke Harashima
Located in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
Name: OBAKE UN Contemporary style Japanese Washi Japanese traditional paper shade floor lamp. Washi shade is famous as Isamu Noguchi Akari lightings. Base is made of brass. Limited pattern painted model. Edition of 3+1AP E26,27 light bulb. Available to work with 100-250V. Artist statement In Japan, there is an animist belief that the soul dwells in old tools that have passed a long time and turns into spirits such as "Youkai" or "OBAKE." Its existence lurks in the darkness of everyday life, sometimes causing fear and sometimes entertaining. This lantern is not an old tool, but it is made by the historic "Kojima Shoten", where the 10th generation are craftsmen in Kyoto. It's rare nowadays, and it's a style in which lanterns are made from bamboo bones to assembling papers and painting in one workshop and go. So, I decided to transform the polite crafted Japanese lanterns, which have been run through a traditional history, into a modern and pop style. It's not just OBAKE lurking in the darkness, but an existence who snuggles up to us as a more sophisticated being. These one-eyed OBAKE have a meaningful look that originated in ancient Sanskrit culture. The red-eye "A [a]" is the facial expression that is the first pronunciation to make a sound in Sanskrit, which means "truth" and "spirit of inquiry" at the same time. The blue-eyed "UN [hu?]" expresses the pronunciation to close the sound, and at the same time means "wisdom" and "nirvana." There is also the idea that describing the beginning and end of the universe is represented by considering the "A" and "UN" as a pair. In Asia, it is a common sight to see a pair of guardian statues...

Korean Medicine Chest with Drawers Yakchang
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Korean medicine or apothecary chest with curved leg support circa the first quarter of the 20th century. Known as Yakchang in Korea, the chest was used to sort and store herb medicines in its many small drawers. The prototype was originated in China, but this piece is distinctively Korean because of the classic style of the brass hardware. the configuration of the storage space in the lower part, the shape of the leg support and the wood paneling details. The upper part features thirty-six drawers with divided in six rows, each with a brass pull ring and two herb names in Hanja, carved and gilt. The lower part has a bi-door panels open to a storage compartment, which is flanked by four more drawers. The frame was painted and lacquered dark while the drawers remained natural. The front panels of the drawers and the doors were all made from Zelkova wood, showcasing its lovely linear dark grains. The interiors of the drawers are very clean and free of odor (have not been extensively used to store medicine). Antique Japanese Meiji Period Kutani Porcelain Vase by Shoundo / Matsumoto Sahei
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine antique Japanese Meiji period Kutani porcelain vase. By Matsumoto Sahei/Shoundo. In an aka-e style decorated throughout in iron red with extensive gilt accents. There are cartouches to either side both with branches of red flower with a backdrop of clouds on a white ground. With 2 figural dragon finial handles. Marked to the base with '九谷松雲堂製' which translates as 'Made by Shoundo of Kutani' Matsumoto Sahei (1851-1918) was a master potter who enjoyed success & recognition during his era. In 1876, Sahei received the artist name Shoundo from the nanga painter Tokuda Kansho - he would use that title for nearly 20 years until passing it onto his son as his successor in 1893. Sahei also has the distinction of taking Tokuda Yasokichi I as an apprentice when the latter was 17-years-old. The Tokuda family is perhaps one of the most famous families of Japanese ceramics: Yasokichi I is credited with revitalizing the lost art of ko-Kutani and Yasokichi I, II, & III were all recognized as "Living National Treasures" during their lifetimes. Shoundo exhibited internationally numerous times at the tail end of the 19th Century. The Keisei Isogaya Museum of Art (which specializes in Meiji Kutani) has a vase of Sahei's that was exhibited in the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. He is listed as exhibiting a wide variety of porcelain goods at the 1878, 1889, and 1900 Paris World Exhibitions. He is also listed as exhibiting 'incense burners & porcelain' at the World's Columbian Exhibition held in 1893 in Chicago. The pair of vases that Sahei exhibited in Paris in 1900 bear a strong resemblance to this pair. Simply a wonderfully rare Japanese porcelain...
