Chinese Republic Period Carved Amethyst Quartz Vase with Cover

The lid its self is ribbed and rests on the top of the urn between two further Kylin heads holding in there mouth loose rings. The main body of the vase is covered in Taotie masks in a stylized form. Chinese Stoneware Funeral Shrine Model and Figure Ming Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
A stoneware shrine model with a figurine made in Ming dynasty (15th-17th century) in China and used as funeral burial objects. It is not known whether the two objects were originally associated, but they display similar glaze and oxidation and were in the same collection. The stoneware building is an architectural rendering of a typical ancestor shrine used at the time. It features a single room behind an elaborate front with double doors, under a multiple layered eaves. There are great architectural and decorative details throughout. The green glaze shows a wonderful silvery oxidation, an indication that the piece was buried in the ground. The side appears to be glazed lightly originally and some scrape marks and oxidized glaze residues remains. The back is unglazed. The figure is a typical tomb figurine...

19th Century Tibetan Patinated Bronze Figure of Tara on New Black Base
Located in Hudson, NY
This fine old bronze of Tara was made for the purpose of focusing on the process of meditation regarding her aspects of wisdom and compassion. Crafted in Tibet but nearer to India and its influences this figure is an interesting combination of Hindu and Buddhist art and religion. Originally Tara was conceived as a Hindu mother goddess with the spread of Buddhism she was redesigned sometime after 4th century giving her a new role within the spreading Buddhist religion. This seems to have taken place in Shri Lanka and then spread out and back into India and Tibet thru China. At this time Shri Lanka was a great trading center and was host to many religious aspects, sects and ideals. The figure is cast with many fine details and is patinated in a warm green, brown showing traces of a coppery red color. The bronze content of this figure has a high amount of copper in the smelting giving the bronze a rich internal red color. Seated in lalitasana with her pendent right foot resting on a separately cast Padma or lotus pillow...

Chinese Bamboo Pomegranate Teapot, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Tea drinking has been an integral part of Chinese culture for centuries, resulting in a wide range of social customs and material traditions. In addition to tea leaves, water, and heat, the art of drinking tea (chayi) calls for a variety of teaware and utensils - both practical and decorative. This charming teapot dates to the late Qing dynasty and is hand-carved from a hollow length of bamboo in the shape of a ripe pomegranate. The handle is carved to resemble a thin branch, which forks to either side of the teapot bearing long, slender leaves. The teapot has a squat, rounded form and a dark brown finish, reminiscent of Yixing red clay teapots...
