Japanese wooden mask

About the Item

A rare three-eyed Japanese Bukaku comic demon mask, dating from the early Edo period, but could also be from the late Momoyama period. The early Edo period is the golden age of Noh tragic theater. It is sculpted by accentuating the depth of the eye sockets and drawing deep lines of expression, thus adding a deep sense of terror. The pigment is original, The lack of color is due to the wear and tear of time. The Bukuku mask is an ancient Kyogen version of the Noh Beshimi.
