Satsuma ware dates back to the early 17th century, but it gained widespread popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the 1930s and 1940s. Satsuma vases produced during this time often reflected a mix of traditional and modern influences, as Japan went through a period of cultural exchange and artistic experimentation.
Satsuma vases are made from a type of Japanese earthenware clay known for its fine texture and malleability. The vases are hand-formed or wheel-thrown and then meticulously hand-painted with intricate designs using enamel paints. The distinctive crackled glaze was achieved by firing the vases at a relatively low temperature, allowing the glaze to crack during the cooling process.
The moriage technique involves applying three-dimensional, raised ornamentation to the surface of the ceramic piece, creating a visually textured and layered effect. Artisans create three-dimensional patterns, designs, or intricate motifs using a special mixture of clay, slip, or porcelain paste. In this early 19th century work by Gamo Rakan a light ink wash applied to the silk background silhouettes the moon and suggests the atmosphere of early evening. Even though it is a literati subject, Rakan’s bamboo is quite realistic with a strong decorative style. The painting finds its inspiration from Chinese Ming dynasty painters who often used a single-tone, jet black stroke to emphasize the calligraphic nature of bamboo.
In a different era, decorative would have been seen as somewhat unrefined. But increasingly in the Edo period, it was the hallmark of high style. The Japanese people, in particular the rising merchant class, had gradually become apathetic toward the traditional Sesshu and Kano schools of painting. Chinese professional and amateur painters living in the port of Nagasaki during the 18th century had a profound effect on Japanese painting and the freshness of their style and its decorative appeal contributed greatly to its popularity. A very decorative rich and colourful pair of pictures are hand painted in reverse on panes of glass. This is a very difficult and highly skilled process where the finest detailing has to be painted first unlike traditional artwork. Both pictures show very similar images, one of the Emperor and the other of the Empress both wearing fabulous elaborately decorated silk gowns. They are seated on an impressive throne chair with white marble carved elephants on blue stands in the background standing on a detailed tiled floor.
These superb paintings are displayed in their original carved hardwood frames with a black lacquered finish. The backs are panelled and held in place with neat rectangular wooden pegs.
On the back, there appears to be old chalked detail from an auction or saleroom, Hinkley, lot 37 library.

This very impressive & unusual charger depicts six immortal poets or scribes set in a landscape surround by calligraphy scrolls and writing paraphernalia and tables with scholarly objects and teapots, to the center is a screen emblazoned with a Hoho phoenix type bird, the scene is contained in a geometric black border. The ground is fully gilt and decorated with an all-over repeating poly-chrome pattern, the rear of the charger is also finely hand-painted with four Japanese Mon devices and four floral panels.
Condition is very good indeed, no damage or restoration, this very beautiful and rare antique Imari charger...
