Japan, Spectacular Ceramic Vase by Akira Arakawa circa 2000
Located in PARIS, FR
Akira Arakawa, born in 1950 in Hamamatsu and a graduate of Kokushikan University’s Department of Architecture, has carved a unique path in Japanese ceramics. Although trained in architecture, he is a self-taught ceramic artist, renowned for his exceptional mastery of crystallized glazes. This intricate technique demands precise temperature control, reaching extreme levels of 1250°C to 1300°C to melt the glaze components thoroughly. As the temperature slowly decreases, crystals emerge, forming delicate flower or snowflake patterns on the glazed surface. By adding zinc or rutile, Arakawa can manipulate the size and shape of these crystals. This meticulous process results in captivating works like this deeply carved vase, where blue crystals stand out against earthy backgrounds, creating striking contrasts between crystallized and vitrified areas. Arakawa’s technical excellence has earned him numerous accolades, particularly in Japan’s ceramic competitions and exhibitions. Arakawa’s work has been featured in prestigious events, including multiple selections for the Nissin Noodle Bowl...

Shoji Hamada Tenmoku Glaze & Kaki Trailing Vase with Original Signed Sealed Box
By Shoji Hamada
Located in Studio City, CA
An exquisite, beautifully crafted Japanese pottery vase by master potter Shoji Hamada featuring Hamada's famous signature tenmoku glaze with kaki trailing. The original Hamada signed and sealed wood storage box is included as well as the written appraised signature of his son Shinsaku Hamada. The vase also comes with a printed artist profile/sales brochure of Hamada (featuring some of his other presumably available work). It appears this piece was offered at the Keio Department store in Shinjuku, Tokyo. At first glance, this may seem odd but in fact, this is quite an honor in Japan. This store is known for selling and exhibiting such high-profile artists and potters as Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie, Gyokudo Kawai, Shiko Munakata, Kawai Kanjiro, and Rosanjin Kitaoji. A major goal of many ceramic artists in Japan is to have a one-man exhibition in a department store. For many Westerners, this is a strange concept. Some of the larger department stores have up to three or four dedicated galleries showing concurrent art exhibitions. A well-known artist's exhibition can bring in hundreds, often thousands, of customers to a store and increase revenue for other sales in the millions-of-yen range. These exhibits are usually longer running and highlight a potter's career, like a Living National...

19th Century Spinach Jade Snuff Bottle with Crane and Baby Etching
Located in Lomita, CA
This spinach jade snuff bottle stands out from others because of the surface etching of a crane and its offspring, we are told. This snuff bottle is in very good condition with its original parts, as far as we can tell. Jade snuff bottles such as this, epitomize elegance and tradition in Chinese artistry. Crafted meticulously from precious jade, these diminutive vessels once held powdered tobacco, serving as ornate accessories for affluent individuals during the Qing Dynasty. Jade, revered for its symbolic significance and believed mystical properties, adds allure to these bottles. Spinach jade is a variety of jadeite, a mineral prized for its rich green color and translucency. This particular type of jadeite exhibits a deep green hue with darker veining, resembling the color of spinach leaves, hence the name. The intensity of the green can vary, ranging from light to dark shades. Spinach jade is highly valued in traditional Chinese culture and is often used in jewelry, carvings, and decorative objects. Its distinctive color and unique patterns make it sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of gemstones and lapidary art. Of rectangular section, the squared bottle with gilt-incised neck and domed lid with ivory...

33 Step Lounge Chair Polished Brass by Zhipeng Tan
By Zhipeng Tan
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
This visceral and sculptural chair is designed and made by renown artist Zhipeng Tan. Size and color is customizable upon request, lead time is 45-60 days. We ship internationally. Since graduating with an industrial design degree from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhipeng Tan has focused on the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. Through this foundry process, rich in heritage and tradition, Tan explores his interest in organic forms. Often inspired by his environmental surroundings, such as water and plants, he explores anthropomorphic themes, as well. Though trained as an industrial designer, he has become an accomplished self-taught sculptor, eagerly exploring the elastic and permeable boundaries between art and design and finding a harmonious fusion of sculpture and furniture, provocative objects of both beauty and utility. Though from his early work, one may sense the influence of Joan Miró, Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi, and in his more recent pieces there is a nod to the Post-Pop sensibilities of Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, the work of Zhipeng Tan is thoroughly original, an expression of his exuberance and imagination. In all of his work, one may see an exploration of our fundamental humanity and a desire to discover worlds within worlds. From the 33 Step Chair...
