Chinese Six Dynasties Pottery Model of an Armored Horse, 3rd-4th Century, China
About the Item
An extremely rare Chinese painted pottery model of an armored horse, Six Dynasties period (220-581 AD), TL tested by Oxford Authentication.
The stocky war horse portrayed standing four square, fully bridled, and with a armored blanket and saddle. Pieces from this period are extremely rare.
The six dynasties, along with the northern and southern dynasties. were a particularly violent period in Chinese history, with many different kingdoms vying for control of China after the fall of the Han Dynasty in 220 AD, until the reunification of China by the Sui in 581. The tomb pottery form this period is primarily militaristic in nature, indicating that nobles controlled their own private armies.
