Japanese Bamboo Basket Ikebana by Abe Motoshi

By Abe Motoshi

Located in Atlanta, GA

A Japanese Ikebana bamboo basket woven by artist Abe Motoshi (Japanese, b. 1942). Constructed with lacquered reddish Madake bamboo and rattan with technique of open and irregular twinning, the basket features an organic form with undulating woven surface with wavy crossing lines. The basket appears simple and refined, but the making process is deceivingly sophisticated. Clean and precise, it is of the signature style of Abe Motoshi's. The basket is signed on the base. It comes with the original tomobako storage box with inscription of the title on the lid as well as the artist's name and seal under the lead. A yellow wrapping cloth and a printout of the artist's biography from Tai Modern...

Chinese Ming Dynasty Bronze Nanhai Guanyin, 16th/17th Century, China

Chinese Ming Dynasty Bronze Nanhai Guanyin, 16th/17th Century, China

Located in Austin, TX

A decidingly charming Chinese polychromed and gilt cast bronze figure of Nanhai Guanyin, Guanyin of the South Sea, Ming Dynasty, 16th/17th century, China. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin. Guanyin rests one hand in his lap, holding a cup of pure water said to be able to alleviate all suffering. His other hand is raised, holding a willow branch which is used to sprinkle the healing waters. The two lotus blossoms to either side of Guanyin would originally have supported figures of the acolytes...

Chinese Bronze Horse on Flying Swallow Sculpture on Carved Wood Base
Chinese Bronze Horse on Flying Swallow Sculpture on Carved Wood Base

Chinese Bronze Horse on Flying Swallow Sculpture on Carved Wood Base

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Vintage bronze sculpture features a galloping horse stepping on a flying bird, with prominent green verdigris patina on highly detailed cast. The sculpture is a replica of the Flying Horse of Gansu, also known as the Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow, probably made in 1970s. The figurine has fitted carved wood base on rounded feet; the natural warm tones of the wood bring out the beautiful patina colors, enhancing the presentation. The original bronze sculpture, dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 CE), was discovered in 1969 in a Han dynasty tomb in Gansu Province, China. It is described as "perfectly balanced on the one hoof which rests without pressure on a flying swallow, it is a remarkable example of three-dimensional form and of animal portraiture with the head vividly expressing mettlesome vigor." It was determined that the tomb belonged to an army general who had been given the important task of maintaining imperial frontier defenses. The horse is believed to be a "celestial horse" or "blood-sweating horse", a Mongolian breed brought to China from Fergana on emperor's orders in 104 BCE, that was highly prized as mark of status by the Han elite and military society. The sculpture was exhibited internationally in the 1970s to a great success, but in 2002 it was included the Gansu Flying Horse in the inaugural list of 64 grade-one cultural relics that are forbidden to be taken out of mainland China for exhibition. The sculpture is not marked; we are offering a similar Han horse...

Early Japanese Hand Basket with Brocade Interior by Suzuki Gengensai
Early Japanese Hand Basket with Brocade Interior by Suzuki Gengensai

Early Japanese Hand Basket with Brocade Interior by Suzuki Gengensai

By Suzuki Gengensai

Located in Atlanta, GA

This small elegant woven bamboo basket was meant to be a hand-hold bag with its brocade interior (which appears original). It was made by Suzuki Gengensai (1891-1950) circa 1910-20s. Suzuki Gengensai was from Kansai region and active in Osaka. He studied bamboo art under Yamashita Kochikusai (1876-1947) and became an independent artist in 1913. He received his artist name Gengensai in 1914 and in 1923 he changed the characters to Gen, a slight written variation of the character. This basket was signed in the former way, which helps to date the piece to the early part of the artist's career circa 1914-1923. The basket is tightly woven in variation of twill plating that creates contrasting bands on the surface. The base was constructed with short bamboo stripes on the corners and side with ornamental knots. A closely related piece (Object Number: 2006.3.651) with slight different surface twill patterns is in the collection of Asian Art Museum San Francisco. Comparing the two, they show almost identical form as well as the base construction. Both also have brocade interior and most likely were woven during the same period. Another documented example can be found on page 180 in "Baskets Masterpieces of Japanese Bamboo Art...

Antique Chinese Porcelain Blue De Hue Zhadou Slop Jar Spittoon, 19 Century

Located in Amsterdam, Noord Holland

Superb antique Chinese porcelain zhadou. Blue de Hue porcelain for the Vietnamese market. Decorated with butterflies, flowers and bats. The porcelain is almost like soft paste from the Qianlong period. Such small 'zhadou' were used as table-top slops jars rather than as floor spittoons. When making tea, the Chinese first rinse the cups and teapot in boiling water to cleanse and warm them. Such water would be jettisoned into a 'zhadou' along with tea dregs and other waste. Blue de hue porcelain From the 1700s onwards, kings of the Le-Trinh dynasty in Vietnam ordered porcelain from China for their court. This type is named after Hue, the 19th-century capital of the last royal dynasty in Vietnam, the Nguyen dynasty...
