Both jars are hand-painted in traditional Imari designs. They feature beautiful waterside scenes painted in cobalt blue and two shades of iron red, all with gilded accents.
The colors are vibrant, and the scenes are complex.
One jar features a shoreline, while the other scene features a cresting wave.
Above the main scenes on each jar, there are medallions adorned with gilded floral decorations. Additionally, a ring of patterns inspired by Japanese textiles encircles the shoulder and base of each jar.
The hand-painted panels on the reverse side mirror the designs on the front but include many subtle variations.
On the side of each jar, there is a classic Imari depiction of a vase set on a garden terrace.
These exquisite pieces were crafted in Japan during the Meiji Period, around 1880.

This rare and outstanding ceramic court attendant was made during what many consider to be China’s Golden Age, the T’ang Dynasty. It was at this point that China’s outstanding technological and aesthetic achievements opened to external influences, resulting in the introduction of numerous new forms of self-expression, coupled with internal innovation and considerable social freedom. The T’ang dynasty also saw the birth of the printed novel, significant musical and theatrical heritage and many of China’s best-known painters and artists. The T’ang Dynasty took control in 618 AD, when the Li family seized power from the last crumbling remnants of the preceding Sui Dynasty. This political and regal regime was long-lived, and lasted for almost 300 years. The imperial aspirations of the preceding periods and early T’ang leaders led to unprecedented wealth, resulting in considerable socioeconomic stability, the development of trade networks and vast urbanisation for China’s exploding population (estimated at around 50 million people in the 8th century AD). The T’ang rulers took cues from earlier periods, maintaining many of their administrative structures and systems intact. Even when dynastic and governmental institutions withdrew from management of the empire towards the end of the period – their authority undermined by localised rebellions and regional governors known as jiedushi –the systems were so well-established that they continued to operate regardless. A very nicely made 18th century Kangxi Amsterdam Bont porcelain bowl.
We take a look at Amsterdams Bont porcelain from China. A relatively unknown niche of Chinese porcelain from ca 1680-1740 that was partly decorated in Europe. Because mainstream Chinese collectors have yet to discover the historical significance of these wares they are relatively easy to find in Holland. While also being highly interesting and of often super quality and with an amazing array of decorations. Amsterdams Bont is a name given to porcelain partly decorated in the Netherlands (most likely in cities like Delft, Haarlem, Makkum). Because Amsterdam was at this moment in time the trade centre of the western world and also of the porcelain trade a lot of this over enamelling was probably commissioned by Amsterdam merchants, to reap higher profits on otherwise boring Chinese wares. The name Amsterdam Bont probably derives from the fact that these type of decorated ware was sold by Amsterdam Merchants. Amsterdam Bont consists of either blanc or under glaze blue decorated Chinese porcelain of basic quality, that was later enhanced with red and sometimes other colours in the Netherlands. This is an elegant porcelain Chinese export porcelain Bottle Vase raised on a low foot, all hand painted in a blue and white dragon pattern, which we date to the mid 20th century, circa 1950.
The vase is fairly large and very well hand potted in a Classic bottle shape on a low foot having a clear white glaze with a light blue tinge. The base is also glazed to the centre and the foot rim has been carefully hand-cut.
The vase is finely hand painted in a large range of cobalt blue tones from a light blue to a deep dark, almost black tones of cobalt blue, all around the body with two five toed dragons dancing among clouds. There are border patterns around the foot rim and the lower body all between blue circles with double blue circles just below the top rim.
The base has a carefully hand painted underglaze-blue six-character apocryphal Qing - Qianlong ( 1736 to 1795) seal mark, though we date this vase to the mid 20th century.
Approximate Weight: about 2.3Kg. unpacked.
