Chinese Lapis Lazuli Carved Group of Figures Sculpture

About the Item

This is a large heavy Chinese lapis lazuli well carved in details group of figures sculpture.`It depicts two young ladies very well dressed in southern and northern dynasty clothes with traditional Chinese hair styles standing up between a tree trunk. The shorter one is playing a flute and the other one is listening to the music while holding a large fan in her left hand behind her back and a Ruyi in her right hand ( It is a ceremonial scepter in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune. In Chinese Art, the ruyi appears in Buddhist saints or Daoist immortals). They are flanked by different kind of birds and it’s feathers. At the right side and top, there are two peacocks that surround them with their tail of feathers. A pelican that is missing a fish is at the left side near the lady holding the fan. There are some lotus flowers adorning the base near the peacock. The sculpture stands over an asymmetric oval wood base with wide C shaped feet. It is decorated with some scrolls and wavy shaped border carving. Peacocks symbolize dignity and beauty. It is also associated with the goddess Guan Yin and mean holiness and protection. Pelican symbolize love, sacrifice and motherhood.
