Pair Creamware Vases 18th Century English with Turquoise Trim Circa 1780
Located in Katonah, NY
WHY WE LOVE IT: One of our absolute favorites! A pair of 18th-century creamware flower holders complete with stands and covers made in England by Neale & Co. was one of the finest 18th century English potteries. The entire composition is classically elegant. The flower holders are decorated with turquoise swags and delicately painted flowers. The tops are pierced for flower stems. The handles are made in a pair of entwined snakes painted in turquoise with bright red mouths. This flower holder could be used with the tops for individual stems or without the tops for a bouquet. All parts of the set have survived and remained together for the past 200 years. History of Creamware: Creamware is the name given to a type of earthenware pottery made from cream-colored clays from Dorset and Devonshire combined with calcined flint. Creamware was first produced in England sometime before 1740. Foremost of the pioneers of creamware in the Staffordshire Potteries was Thomas Whieldon. He produced a wide variety of creamware. The young Josiah Wedgwood was in partnership with Thomas Whieldon from 1754-1759. When Wedgwood left to set up his own business, he immediately directed his efforts to develop creamware. Many of the Staffordshire Potteries, especially Neale & Co., learned from Whieldon and Wedgwood and developed their own excellent creamware products. Dated: 1795 to 1810 Hanley Staffordshire...

Antique Judaica Wine/ Water Ceramic Large Jug with Allegorical Images
Located in Doha, QA
This remarkable antique ceramic jug, likely from the late 18th century stands as a testament to symbolic craftsmanship and cultural interweaving. Its white-glazed body, adorned with intricate blue hand-painted motifs, showcases a rich tapestry of imagery: two armored knights flank a central coat of arms crowned by a noble eagle, evoking themes of protection, authority, and divine oversight. A sphinx, emblematic of riddles and ancient wisdom, is also depicted- a nod to the Jewish people’s historical sojourn in Egypt and the enduring significance of that epoch in Jewish memory. A goat as representative of the Devil to make Adam and Eve to sin and take a forbidden fruit in Paradise. Clusters of various fruits embellish the design, symbolizing abundance and the promise of the land. Prominently featured are two Stars of David, affirming a deep connection to Jewish identity and heritage. The jug’s sculpted handle, fashioned as a coiled snake descending toward a human face-possibly representing Adam-recalls the Genesis narrative of the fall, the serpent, and the origins of humanity. This interplay of symbols suggests a narrative arc of struggle, survival, and spiritual endurance, potentially representing the journey of the Jewish people from Eden through exile and beyond. The jug’s substantial capacity-holding up to five liters of liquid-indicates its intended use for wine or water, both integral to daily life and ritual. Its distinctive shape, featuring a wavy, ornamental opening, hints at Mediterranean origins, likely Spain or Italy, where such design elements were prevalent in ceramic art of the period. This stylistic attribute, coupled with the painted date of 1527, adds another layer to its historical context. The year 1527 holds significance in Jewish history. In that year, Hayyim ben David Schwartz, a notable Jewish printer, obtained permission to print Hebrew books...

Ancient Neoclassic Sterling Silver Coffee Pot, Palermo, Sicily circa 1789
Located in Milano, IT
Ancient Neoclassic Sterling Silver Coffee Pot, Palermo, Sicily circa 1789 Embossed and engraved silver coffee pot Silversmith, probably Agostino Natoli Diego Di Maggio, Silversmith Consul in 1789 and 1796 Palermo, 1789 It measures 14.17 in (36 cm) high and weighs 2.76 lb (1.252 g) State of conservation: few signs of use and some slight blemishes The large silver coffee pot has a round mouthpiece with a markedly everted rim, on which hinges a domed lid with very full molded pod shapes; a closed bud surmounted by a small sphere serves as a knob. The polygonal neck descends and widens into molded elements that come together, with larger pods, at the point where it is attached to the body. The body in turn is united to a well-shaped foot, which ends in a flat base with a vertical rim. From the body rises a spout with a circular mouth accented with a thick rim. An angled loop, made of ebonized wood, is applied to the neck by means of a double-cone element having a sphere at its center; it ends in a silver cone...
