About the Item

This elegant 3-piece Martha Washington "States" Place Service is a refined blend of antique English and French porcelain, inspired by the historically significant Chinese export service created for Martha Washington in the late 18th century. This service, revered for its patriotic symbolism, includes a cup and saucer made in England, retailed exclusively by Tiffany & Co., and an antique French plate, both replicating the design of the original Chinese export porcelain commissioned by George and Martha Washington. Historical Background: The original "States" service was commissioned in 1796 by George Washington for his wife, Martha, and was produced in China for export to America. This service was notable for its federally-themed design, which featured the names of the original 15 states encircling a central gilded eagle motif. The eagle was modeled after the Great Seal of the United States, symbolizing national pride and unity during the early years of the Republic. Pieces from this original set were treasured heirlooms, and reproductions in porcelain became popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially among those celebrating early American history.
