Pair of Antique Japanese Meiji 'Black Ship' Imari Porcelain Cups & Saucers
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine pair of antique Japanese Imari porcelains demitasse coffee or tea cups & saucers. In the 'Black Ship' pattern. Decorated throughout with painted depictions of Western sailors and their ships in reds, blues, and greens with extensive gilt accents throughout. The centers of the cups and saucers each have a stylized gilt kanji for longevity (寿). The bases of both cups & saucers have apocryphal Chinese reign marks for the Ming Dynasty of the Chenghua period (太明成化年製). Black Ships (黒船, kurofune) was a name used for Western sea vessels arriving in Japan from the 16th - 19th Century. The name originated from the very first Portuguese vessels to trade with the Japanese ca. 1543 had hulls painted black. When the expedition of Matthew Commodore Perry in 1853 forcibly ended Japan's self-imposed isolationist sakoku (鎖国, lit. "locked country") period, his steam-powered warships inspired fear in the Japanese populace with their coal fueled black smoke. Subsequently, the Black Ships became symbolic of the end of Japan's isolationist period. Simply a wonderful set of antique Arita...

6 Antique German Dresden Meissen Klemm Carl Thieme Pitcher Tea Cups Plates
Located in Dayton, OH
Antique lot includes creamer, demitasse cup, and two bone dishes by Dresden, one demitasse cup by Meissen, and one candlestick by Klemm. “The Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur Dresden GmbH (Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in Dresden Ltd), generally known in English as Dresden Porcelain, is a German company for the production of decorative and luxury porcelain. Founded in1872, it is located in Potschappel, a suburb of the town of Freital in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district about 8 km (5 mi) southwest of Dresden, the capital of Saxony. Dresden Porcelain introduced its blue "SP Dresden" trademark in 1902.” "Meissen porcelain or Meissen china was the first European hard-paste porcelain. Early experiments were done in 1708 by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. After his death that October, Johann Friedrich Böttger continued von Tschirnhaus's work and brought this type of porcelain to the market, financed by Augustus the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. The production of porcelain in the royal factory at Meissen, near Dresden, started in 1710 and attracted artists and artisans to establish, arguably, the most famous porcelain manufacturer known throughout the world. Its signature logo, the crossed swords, was introduced in 1720 to protect its production; the mark of the swords is reportedly one of the oldest trademarks in existence. Meissen remained the dominant European porcelain factory, and the leader of stylistic innovation, until somewhat overtaken by the new styles introduced by the French Sèvres factory in the 1760s, but has remained a leading factory to the present day. Since 1991, the manufactory has been operating as the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH,[2] whose owner is the Free State of Saxony. The company is one of the world's leading porcelain manufacturers and one of the oldest and most internationally known German luxury brands." "Karl Richard Klemm founded a porcelain decorating studio in Striesen bei Dresden in 1869. The porcelain was obtained primarily from the Meissen factory itself, much of it being seconds. The decorating style of Richard Klemm closely matched that of the Meissen factories at that time. He often used a heavily applied style that focused on florals. In many instances, the porcelain pieces of Richard Klemm are emblazoned with a gold leaf at the base. This gold leaf was used to hide the marks made by the original manufacturer of the blanks that he used for decorating. Richard Klemm, along with Helena Wolfsohn, Karl Thiem, Ambrosius Lamm and Donath & Co., were among the most sought after porcelain decorating studios at this time. In the early 1880's Richard Klemm registered his mark, the "Klemm Dresden...

Royal Bayreuth Porcelain Figurine Registered "MOUSE PITCHER"
Located in Bloomfield Hills, MI
Royal Bayreuth Mouse Pitcher is glazed in soft grays with sparkling red eyes. This piece is extremely rare. The size being 8.5 inches high when normally this mouse is 6 inches. The bottom is marked: "Registered." The Royal Bayreuth factory has been the world's unparalleled leader in the production of porcelain for over 200 years, As the oldest Bavarian china firm under private ownership, the factory still stands like a fortress on a hill in the little village of Tettau. It was founded in 1794 in the Thuringian Hills, adjacent to what at one time was known as the East German border. Though delicate to the touch, it's durability makes it last for hundreds of years. The porcelain factory has survived a number of troublesome events, including the Napoleonic-Franco Prussian turmoil, two World Wars, numerous changes in management and ownership, and the great fire of 1897 which destroyed a number of important records and molds. The factory had its roots planted in 1792, when the famous, naturalist and botanist, Alexander von Humboldt, also an expert German geologist, was appointed by the king to research a possible factory site. The king desired a porcelain factory in the Thuringia province, and commanded von Humboldt to find the ideal location and personnel. After a lengthy study, von Humboldt reported to the king that Tettau should be the site of the factory and recommended that Johann Schmidt and Wilhelm Grenier be awarded the permit. By 1794, the factor was open for business. Anytime you see the Royal Bayreuth logo, you will see 1794 as the official date of commencement operations. Dinnerware, dining accessories, coffee and tea sets have been the company's main product line through the years. Just as fascinating are the wide number of collector items that the factory has produced. Included among these are many interesting pieces such as: figurals, rose tapestry...

Royal Crown Derby Part Dessert Service, Turquoise with Flower Garlands, 1916
Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful part dessert service made by Royal Crown Derby in 1916. The service consists of one serving dish and ten plates, and is decorated with beautiful scalloped rims in turquoise and gilt, delicate flower garlands and a very find flower spray on each item. The Derby Porcelain factory has its roots in the late 1740s, when André Planché, a Walloon Huguenot refugee, started making simple porcelain toys shaped like animals. Local entrepreneur William Duysbury took an interest in his skills and worked with him to improve the quality of his wonderfully shaped items. Together they laid the foundations of what would become a very refined tradition of figure making at Derby. In 1769 Duysbury bought up the bankrupted Chelsea factory, incorporating their reputation for high quality figures, vases and tableware; this combination of traditions, porcelain making skills, sophisticated clients and available work people created one of the best porcelain factories of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The factory went through many ups and downs in the 19th Century and was completely re-constituted in the late 19th Century; today it is one of the very few factories still operative. This plate is a fine example of the Edwardian style with its grace, fine painting and delicate gilt. The pattern has similarities to the famous "Royal Antoinette...
