Rosenthal Porcelain Theodor Karner "PHEASANT"#434

About the Item

"Pheasant" by Theodor Karner #434 produced during the 1920s for Rosenthal Porcelain in Germany is beautifully rendered and posed in the midst of walking and perhaps calling and claiming his territory. The colors are rich earth-toned brown with bright blue and red head and eye detail. Theodore Karner was born in 1884 and died in Munich in 1966. Kärner’s master craftsmanship and artistry were key to his employment at several prominent German porcelain factories over the course of his career, including Nymphenburg, Rosenthal, Allach, and Eschenbach where he sculpted both beautiful and memorable animal and fowl figures. He was trained as a modeller at Hutschenreuther Company in Northern Bavaria from 1898 to 1903, and afterwards attended the Bavarian Royal Art School in Munich, taking classes in decorative sculpture. Kärner was a guest student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich between 1914 and 1921, where he took classes from Professor Heinrich von Reins (1850-1941), a painter of animals. Perhaps this is where he developed an interest in, and a keen eye for, animal subject matter. Rosenthal was originally founded in 1879 as a family business. The founder, Philipp Rosenthal, eventually moved his porcelain painting to Selb in Bavaria, where he industrialized in the castle Erkersreuth with his painting workshop. In 1897, Philipp Rosenthal founded the company Bauer, Rosenthal & Co., as well as Philipp Rosenthal & Co. AG. In 1908, Rosenthal bought the porcelain manufacturer Thomas in Marktredwitz, and the porcelain company Zeidler & Co. in 1917. The 1930 and early 1940s was a period of great difficulty for the Rosenthal enterprise, but by the 1950s Philip Rosenthal, son of founder, won a pioneering role in the modern product design. By 1960 the Rosenthal Studious was opened in Nuremberg, from which the world's first design chain was built. In 1965 the uniform name Rosenthal Glas & Porzellan AG was elected and shortened to Rosenthal AG in 1969. During the 1970s they collaborated with industrial designers such as Raymond Loewy, Tapio Wirkkala, Elsa Fischer-Treyden, Timo Sarpaneva, Verner Panton, Luigi Colani and Walter Gropius, creating an impressive series of products. In 1997, Rosenthal AG was 90% owned by the British-Irish Waterford Wedgwood Group. Rosenthal was the market leader for high-quality porcelain and glassware in Germany and was the world market leader in conjunction with Waterford Wedgwood. In the year 2000, the company took over the Hutschenreuther brand and Hutschenreuther-Werk B in Selb. On 20 July 2009, a sale was announced to an Italian company, Sambonet Paderno Industrie (Arcturus Group).Founded on 1 August 2009, Rosenthal GmbH is an independent part of Sambonet Paderno Industrie (Arcturus Group).Th e Rosenthal company headquarters remain in Selb. The Rosenthal Archive, a collection of around 15,000 exhibits from 130 years of company history, were purchased by the Oberfranken Foundation on 12 August 2009 and is provided as a permanent loan to the Porzellanikon, the State Museum of Porcelain in Selb. These include nearly all product designs, from the company's foundation to today, as well as originals designed by artists such as Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Walter Gropius.

  • Royal Bayreuth Porcelain Figurine Registered "MOUSE PITCHER"
    By Royal Bayreuth
    Located in Bloomfield Hills, MI
Royal Bayreuth Mouse Pitcher is glazed in soft grays with sparkling red eyes. This piece is extremely rare. The size being 8.5 inches high when normally this mouse is 6 inches. The bottom is marked: "Registered." The Royal Bayreuth factory has been the world's unparalleled leader in the production of porcelain for over 200 years, As the oldest Bavarian china firm under private ownership, the factory still stands like a fortress on a hill in the little village of Tettau. It was founded in 1794 in the Thuringian Hills, adjacent to what at one time was known as the East German border. Though delicate to the touch, it's durability makes it last for hundreds of years. The porcelain factory has survived a number of troublesome events, including the Napoleonic-Franco Prussian turmoil, two World Wars, numerous changes in management and ownership, and the great fire of 1897 which destroyed a number of important records and molds. The factory had its roots planted in 1792, when the famous, naturalist and botanist, Alexander von Humboldt, also an expert German geologist, was appointed by the king to research a possible factory site. The king desired a porcelain factory in the Thuringia province, and commanded von Humboldt to find the ideal location and personnel. After a lengthy study, von Humboldt reported to the king that Tettau should be the site of the factory and recommended that Johann Schmidt and Wilhelm Grenier be awarded the permit. By 1794, the factor was open for business. Anytime you see the Royal Bayreuth logo, you will see 1794 as the official date of commencement operations. Dinnerware, dining accessories, coffee and tea sets have been the company's main product line through the years. Just as fascinating are the wide number of collector items that the factory has produced. Included among these are many interesting pieces such as: figurals, rose tapestry...
