Often wryly funny and just as smart, Albert Oehlen’s paintings play the medium for all it’s worth and then some. After realizing that the so-called death of painting freed him to explore "the number of aspects through which one could expand painting," Oehlen started work on a wide variety of figurative and non-objective offerings, in what he has called his "post-non-figurative" art. The artist continuously challenges himself, setting up rules that force him to overcome convention and his own routine in order to arrive at a satisfying image. During his career he has chosen to paint in primary colors only or in gray, to integrate mirrors into his canvases, or to start on computer paintings when the first PCs became available. In his most recent work Oehlen expands painting through the use of advertising posters whose in-your-face aesthetics he transforms with subtle brushwork. Never without a touch of tongue-in-cheek humour, his work seems to be winking at us as it dares us to change the way we perceive an image.

In 1958, sports photographer Neil Leifer took the picture that remains one of his most famous to this day. The day he got the shot - Alan Ameche’s game-winning "Sudden Death" touchdown - was Leifer’s 16th birthday. This game, called "The Greatest Ever Played," signaled football’s emergence as America’s new national pastime; formerly half-empty stadiums welcomed sold-out crowds seemingly overnight, while football surpassed pro baseball and college football in national television ratings. Starting then, on any given Sunday Leifer was most likely shooting a football game somewhere in America. His 1961 photo of legendary Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle dropping back to pass landed Leifer his first cover for Sports Illustrated and cemented his close connection to the sport.
While best known for his iconic photograph of Muhammad Ali towering over a fallen Sonny Liston, and for the enormous diversity of subjects he covered in and out of the sports world, it is his football pictures Leifer considers his best. This collection represents the best of his best, culled from over 10,000 rolls of film on the sport, including hundreds of previously unpublished pictures. Presenting 300 artworks from the years 240 to 1453, The Glory of Byzantium and Early Christendom encapsulates the development of art in eastern Europe and eastern Mediterranean from the very early days of Christianity to the fall of Constantinople. Even when a more secular art developed during the early Renaissance, Byzantine art lived on as the dominant style for religious art, particularly in the Orthodox East. Nevertheless, a perception of Byzantine art as purely religious is misleading: while it included the production of glorious icons, it also encompassed metalwork, architecture, sculpture, wall painting and mosaics, but secular and Christian.
From architecture to jewellery, from coins to paintings, from mosaics to book illuminations, the book explores Byzantine art in all its forms. Unique not only for its extensive variety of art forms, the book also has a vast geographic Scope, including art from Britain to Syria, from Spain to Turkey, from Egypt to Georgia.
