A controversial figure in later life, the Marquis of Stafford, George Granville Leveson-Gower - 1st Duke of Sutherland (1758 - 1833) was a patron of the arts, landowner, politician, diplomat and at times, the richest man in Britain. As part of the Leveson-Gower family of nobility, George was related to Dukes and Earls across the nation. Educated in Westminster and at Christ Church, Oxford, the later Marquis of Stafford was the Member of Parliament for Newcastle-Under-Lyme from 1779 - 1784 and the county of Staffordshire from 1787 - 1799. He also held positions as an Ambassador to France during their revolutionary years and held various other posts until his passing.

The very scarce complete 1813 twenty-one volume edition of the plays of Shakespeare. Referred to as the Reed Edition of 1813, this is also known as Johnson-Steevens-Reed 6, the "sixth edition" by Johnson-Steevens, or the "second variorum edition".

The last chapter of these fascinating volumes includes conversion tables to various standard national measure ranging from the Paris foot to the Russian archine, to the Venice braccio, the Egyptian stadium to 'The mathematical foot of China'.
GEORGE ADAMS the younger (1750–1795) was an English scientist, optician and scientific writer. In politics Adams was a Tory, and as such was received with favour at court by George III, who made him his official mathematical instrument maker, succeeding his father George Adams in the post. George III was personally interested in instruments and had Adams produce items for him exclusively, many in silver. Rogers was invited to be Poet Laureate on the occasion of Wordsworth's death 1850, but declined due to his age. Considered one of the great sources of social documentary of London's artistic and literary world of the 18th and early 19th century, he lived to the age of 92 - astonishing for the era.
