Two Typed Letters Signed (TLS) by T. S. Eliot

Two one-page letters on Faber & Faber stationery, SIGNED by T. S. Eliot. The first, dated 1 December 1949 is double sided, 10 1/4 x 8 inches (266 x 204 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). The second is dated 23 August 1950, one sided, 8 x 6 7.8 inches (204 x 174 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). Typed in black and red ink, central vertical and horizontal folds, with no sign of wear. The accompanying envelopes show minor signs of wear and the back flap of the first envelope is partially torn. Fine.
These two typewritten letters were addressed to Robert Cecil Bald (1901 – 1965), an Australian scholar of English Literature, who taught at Cornell University starting in 1937 and then at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1965. They attest to a cordial exchange between a poet and a scholar, and the rich network of contacts that Eliot had both as an author and as the long-time editorial director at Faber & Faber in London (1925-1965).

This is a model of a mill engine created in England by the Stuart Turner company in the beginning of the 20th century. This is the Stuart Turner S50 small mill type engine, of horizontal formation with single cylinder and slip eccentric, powering a 3.5 inch spoked flywheel, free running. This antique model is a miniature of the real one, manufactured to be installed in farms during the British Industrial Revolution. Masterfully crafted with beautiful details and great materials, such; bronze, iron and steel. The model is mount in a piece of wood for display. This is Gilpin's third in his series of works tracing picturesque beauty in British natural landscapes. In it he portrays the landscapes of Scottish Highlands, and describes them lyrically in his text. Prefacing the list of Prints at the end of the second volume, the author says "With regards to the prints, which adorn these volumes, I can only say..... that few of them pretend to be 'exact portraits.' They in general 'only characterize the countries,' through which the reader is carried." A very rare Scottish Mauchline wooden postal ruler and paper folder decorated with a scene of the beach & cliffs in cromer, norfolk and probably dating from the mid 19th century. The full-length oar is an original traditional presentation rowing oar with gilt calligraphy, the crew's names and weights and the Scouts emblem. The Cambridge Scout Boat Club was formed in 1923 and was successful from the start, they were Head of the River on three occasions.

As the oar is full length (12 foot) shipping can be quite expensive. We have come up with an ingenious way to cut the oar so as to make shipping cheaper, the oar can then be easily reassembled. One of the images shows different images of an oar that has been cut down. It is cut by the leather sleeve so the joint is less visible or obvious. The oar can then be bolted together to make the oar one solid piece.

The Cambridge Scout Boat Club was formed in 1923 on CC Charlie Wood's advice. It was thought to be the only such club in the country. C T Wood had rowed at Shrewsbury School and was treasurer for '99 rowing club in its early days.

The club was for Scout Masters, Scouts and Rovers over 16.
The club was successful from the start and the first boat sat in the top three for a quarter of time it raced and the top five for half the time. Scouts I reached 3rd position by the end of their fourth years racing and was only out if the top 5 for one year in the next quarter of a century.
In some years it put out four boats in the town bumps and four in the Time Race, the only two events for which we have most of the results It was Head of the River on three occasions.
Scouts I had the rare distinction of starting from last boat and reaching Head of the River in the town bumps without being bumped.

"Toby" Jug Still Bank and Biscuit Tin, circa 1910
Located in Incline Village, NV
This is both a still bank and a biscuit tin. It would originally have been sold, filled with biscuits. After all of the cookies would have been consumed, the tin (rather than been thrown away) would have been used as a bank to save money. There is a slot for deposits at the back of the neck at the top (see image). Coins would have been removed by lifting or twisting the snug fitting lid. Toby is nicely hand-painted in pleasing colors of green, blue, gold, and white, with realistic flesh tones to the hands and face. The total height is 6 1/2" while the total width is 6" (includes handle). Diameter at the base is 5".
This Toby figured tin was manufactured circa 1911 by the biscuit tin company of Hudson Scott located in Carlisle, England.
It is marked at the bottom "Hudson Scott & Sons Ltd. Carlisle, England."
