Mauchline Wooden Postal Ruler and Paper Folder with Beach & Cliffs, Cromer
About the Item
A very rare Scottish Mauchline wooden postal ruler and paper folder decorated with a scene of the beach & cliffs in cromer, norfolk and probably dating from the mid 19th century. While originally made as souvenir items this ruler also provides a real insight to postal history. The ruler is of flat shape with rounded ends and a smooth edge and is decorated with scroll work designs to either end and on both sides and the main side is printed POSTAL RULER AND PAPER FOLDER with a printed section titled THE PARCELS POST providing instructions and costs of sending parcels and on the opposite side titled BILL STAMPS with a list of values and costs. The ruler also has a printed 8” (20cm) measuring edge both top and bottom, one titled English Inches and the other French Centimetres. On the opposite side the ruler has a central transfer scene titled THE BEACH & CLIFFS, CROMER with a four sections the first titled LETTER POST with the costs of sending letters of varying weight; the second section titled NEWSPAPER and BOOKS, PRINTED PAPERS, CICULARS again showing costs; the third section is titled TELEGRAMS and MONEY ORDERS both with instructions and prices; the fourth and final section titled POSTAL ORDERS again with instructions and prices. - Staffordshire Georgian Two Pearlware Religious Printed Childs Plates with VerseBy StaffordshireLocated in Bishop's Stortford, HertfordshireTwo fine English Georgian, probably Staffordshire, child’s pearlware plates decorated with religious scenes and verse dating from the early 19th century. The finely potted plates are of octagonal shape both with relief molded fruit and floral designs to the rim, one hand painted and other simply glazed rim but with a pink lustre edge. Due to the edge patterning being the same we believe the plates to have originated from the same pottery. Both plates have printed religious scenes to the center with printed prayers, possibly as teaching aids for children. One has a scene of Christ rising from the dead with a prayer reading ‘Behold him rising from the grave. Behold him raised on high. He pleads his merit there to save Transgressor doom’d to die.’ The scene shows soldiers, some sleeping around the entrance to the tomb. The second plate shows a child reading...Category
